Joe Danger developer Hello Games has revealed its upcoming first-person sci-fi action adventure No Man's Sky.

Based on the trailer revealed at VGX, you switch between walking on land, swimming, and most excitingly, flying - both in the planet's atmosphere and in outer space via various types of ships. You can even blow holes in asteroids then zoom through them, like a boss. And don't forget the giant sandworms, because they're there too.

Made by only four people, No Man's Sky looks insanely ambitious. The planets will have their own ecology and ecosystem, according to Hello Games' Sean Murray, who noted "We're all playing in the same universe." So the stars you see in the sky are actually other planets that other players are playing on. Madness!

Check out the mammoth undertaking in No Man's Sky début trailer below. (scroll further down for debut trailer)

Described by Hello's managing director, Sean Murray, as a "Han Solo simulator," it'll start you out on a little planet around the edge of its procedurally generated galaxy. Things on the galactic edge are easier, but maybe less interesting and/or lucrative. You can stick around and explore, scanning for useful materials and mining them for cash, or you can jump into your "life pod," a small starter spacecraft that can't venture beyond your current solar system, and start visiting other planets.

If you want to be a soldier, says Murray, you can take your life pod to a spaceport, buy a sturdier weaponized spaceship, and start hunting for enemies or protecting friendly ships, all with the goal of eventually becoming an unstoppable interstellar warrior. If you want to make money more quickly, you can start mining materials and selling them, eventually buying your own freighter to truck them across the cosmos. Or you can spend your time exploring and cataloging new species. The plan is to make it as free-form as possible, with no narrative but the one in your head; imagine Skyrim with spaceships, no quests, and the make-your-own-fun ethos of Minecraft's survival mode, and you'll have an idea of the vision here.

It sounds like a lighter take on Elite, with a bit of Minecraft and a big focus on exploration. It sounds wonderful basically.

Made Destiny look dull in comparison. Only being made by 4 guys too! Huge hopes for this now but that small team worries me slightly in terms of how big this will be.

It's apparently mostly procedurally generated, so size isn't so much an issue as variety. The guy on VGX seemed so passionate about it though, so I have really high hopes.

This is one of those games that really shows how much gaming has changed this generation. It's the most exciting game announcement I've seen in ages, and it's from a four man indie developer.

It does look deece. I'm a bit sceptical as to whether it can deliver on everything the guy was talking about, though.

This is what I'd hoped ME 2 would have had more of. Fleshed out planets worth exploring (not like the mostly boring ones in ME 1).

I'll still happily give them my money even if they can't deliver on the "real life" aspect of being able to visit anything you can see.

The most worrying part of the game is that its all one persistent online world. Having the infrastructure to back something like that up isn't something you'd expect from a 4 man team.

Wonder if anyone from MS or Sony is trying to get in touch with them to provide support in return for exclusivity. Seems like something that either should try and get.

Or they could just take their time with it and release it when it's ready. That way they're not beholden to either one and anyone who wants to play it on their platform of choice can do so. But saying that, the vast majority of indy exclusives are meant to be showing up on other platforms sooner or later anyway.

I was *just* thinking that... it's Frontier for the 2010s! Really does look great.

I probably missed it, but is this for a particular format or is it multi?

Hope it comes with a galaxy map the size of a room.

This seems pretty ballsy, might be the space game that X Rebirth wasn't.

That is a fantastic trailer. When you get in the ship and fly off and see the supercruisers once you've cleared the atmosphere.

And the Dune planet. :datass:
