Bungie's new game, Destiny, is “still quite like Halo”, according to someone who's apparently seen it in action.

For Kotaku internet super sleuth Superannuation dug up a cache of a web page that detailed one person's experience of visiting Bungie and seeing videos and presentations on it. This person supposedly works at Vancouver company Demonware, which handles online infrastructure for Activision games. Activision, of course, is the publisher of Destiny and, if the contract it signed with Bungie two years ago is still accurate, many more games in the new universe.

So, what did the Demonware employee see? "A live scene walk through demonstrating lots of atmospherics, huge amounts of trees and foliage (SpeedTree), particle effects, dynamic lighting and dynamic time of day ending in a sun set".

Then, after a hands-on session: “This is not a dedicated server game, but there is some simulation and coordination running in their server infrastructure. The game was up and down a lot, playing in a team of 3 we did manage to experience entering a zone to find other players already taking on the bad guys, it's cooperative so we helped out (mostly [name removed], I just died) before both groups went their separate ways. Which is a pretty cool experience, making you feel you are part of a much larger populated world.

“At the end of the day I was excited about the game, I like the feel of being in a large world with different destinations and the interactions along the way. It actually brought back a sense of exploration I recall from playing [Elite] many years ago, although there was no opportunity to shoot aliens in the face in Elite. I'm not fully sold on the appeal of being able to change the colour of a weapon, but I guess it works in China, and customization and individual identity is a big theme for the game.”

Then, the general consensus from others is that Destiny is “still quite like Halo”, but “there is a lot of work still to be done”.

From Eurogamer.

According to the former Halo developer's contract with Activision, Destiny will launch in the autumn of 2013 initially on Xbox 360 and the next Xbox.

If that contract still stands, Bungie has signed up to make four "sci-fantasy, action shooter games" in the Destiny universe every other year from autumn 2013 to 2019. On top of that, Bungie will make four downloadable expansion packs codenamed Comet every other year from autumn 2014 up to 2020.

The first Destiny is for the Xbox 360 and the next Xbox, called the Xbox 720 in the document. It will be sold in shops, but will be boosted by DLC, subscriptions and micro-transactions. Activision and Bungie are considering a PlayStation 3 port for release in 2014, apparently. Subsequent Destiny games will be made for Xbox consoles, PlayStation 4 and PC, if they are considered feasible.

Destiny was first mentioned as Bungie's next game last year, when it was described by a former employee as "World of Warcraft in space".

It's a first-person shooter powered by a brand new game engine with matchmaking and other online modes. In early 2010, Bungie's Joseph Staten teased a GDC audience by asking, "Wouldn't it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you?"

In late April 2010, Bungie and Activision announced a 10-year multi-platform publishing deal. "I can't get into specifics," answered Bungie community director Brian Jarrard, "but we're definitely looking at building a universe that people want to spend time in.

"Much like Halo but we have much more grandiose vision here, so it's a long-term partnership for us. "We're really embarking on something that will be a significant undertaking for the studio that will involve multiple games set inside this brand new IP and universe."

I was bored of everything being turned into an MMO after WOW had success.

This is probably going to be baby's first MMO, pay2win, unbalanced weapons, dlc map packs up the wazzo, and a subscription.

MMOs these days are awful.

If they push those things too heavily then I'll probably end up giving this a miss no matter how good it is. I don't really want to pay Activision a monthly fee and I don't want a borked/limited version of the game for those who don't want to pay it. If they are going down that road then hopefully they get the balance right.

Have subscriptions been known to work on consoles in the past? This is the sort of game that could fold Bungie in a heart beat.

Now sort-of-retired internet snooper superannuation has found new trademarks filed by Bungie which may point towards the name of its new IP.

The developer trademarked “Osiris“, “New Monarchy“, “Seven Seraphs” and “Dead Orbit” to the USCO last year.

It’s also trademarked internet domains for the names above.

Bungie announced last April it was entering into a ten-year publishing deal with Activision over its first new IP since Halo.

According to comments made by Acti COO Thomas Tippl at E3 last year, the new IP looks likely to make its debut bow at this year’s event in Los Angeles.

Whenever the reveal takes place, its reveal will be “incredible,” said Activision studio boss Dave Stohl.

How the strawberry float can they trademark a word like "Osiris"?

If I was an ancient Egyptian, I would be going full Mummy to kick their arses for this. :x

Destiny Story Details, Concept Art Leaked

Leaked materials provided to IGN by a reader have revealed story details and concept art from Destiny, Bungie’s follow-up to the Halo franchise. Bungie has confirmed to IGN that the document was prepared by an advertising agency and represents an outside look at Destiny’s plot, key values and more.

According to the document, “Our story begins seven hundred years from now in the Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man’s Golden Age. A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon. No one knows where it came from or what it’s here for, but only that it’s our protector. Meanwhile, strange, alien monsters creep in from the edge of the universe, determined to take Earth and the Last City. We are young ‘knights’ tasked with defending the remains of humanity, discovering the source of these monsters and – eventually – overcoming it.” Elsewhere in the document, the massive alien ship is referred to as “the Traveler.”

Destiny is further described as “fun and accessible to all,” aiming “to create a universe as deep, tangible and relatable as that of the Star Wars franchise.” Based on the language in the document, it appears that Bungie aims to create a universe accessible to multiple demographics, perhaps suggesting that Destiny will be less mature than Bungie’s efforts with Halo. A quote from Bungie co-founder Jason Jones says “Destiny is designed for your inner seven year old. We want to make it feel like a mythic adventure.”

Destiny’s gameplay is described by the document as “social at its core,” offering “a world to explore with friends, both old and new.” It’s unclear whether this confirms comments from Bungie in 2011 that the game is an MMO, which Bungie later called a joke. The document also includes a Destiny logo along with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 icons, as well as the URL Destiny.com. It’s worth noting that while Destiny.com is currently password-protected, if it is indeed a URL that’s been purchased by Bungie, it could suggest that Destiny will indeed be the game’s final name rather than a codename as previously speculated.

The document includes several other pieces of concept art, seen below.

I think reports that its an MMO will be wide of the mark, at least in a traditional sense.

Oh Lord I want new hardware, but hardware also needs new stand-out IP. Christmas 2013 with the Next Xbox and new AAA games! I can't wait.

It should at least mean they can get much more powerful hardware at a reasonable price. It will be interesting to compare the same game on both this and next gen and see where most improvement has been made.
Will it just be a graphical upgrade or will the next gen version have loads of extra content?

Bungie just released this;
Image

The bright dots represent "1". The dim dots represent "0".

The grid provided is 7x21

If counted top-->bottom, then left-->right, the dots would represent 1010111, 1000101, so on and so forth...

This 7x21 grid creates 21 seven digits binary numbers(the length of each column), which are just one digit off from being ASCII (8 binary digits is one "keyboard" character in ASCII).

In order to remedy this we append a 0 to the left of each number like seen here (Much like how 045 is the same thing as 45, 01010111 is the same thing as 1010111 so we don't end up changing the actual value.).

When converted to text through the ASCII encoding, it says "WE'RE STILL DARK, BRO", which is 21 characters long, the length of each row.

Let the Speculation, Commence.
