Nomic 2: A Forum Game With Rules

Nomic is a game about changing the rules of the game itself!

Last year we played nomic for the first time. Now it's back, and we want you to play with us!

The initial ruleset is written by myself, and includes some initial rules we found improved the general experience from our first game. Any of these initial rules may be changed during the course of play, but will be kept untouched in the following spoiler for future reference.

Core rules

0. OrangeRKN is the host of the game, and responsible for keeping the ruleset updated.

1. Anyone may join the game at any time by posting in the thread.

2. Any player may propose a new rule or propose an amendment to an existing rule.

3. Every player is entitled to vote on proposed rules or amendments. Each player has a single vote on each proposed rule or amendment, including their own.

4. A proposed rule or amendment will be immediately adopted and the ruleset adjusted accordingly on reaching a majority of three votes in favour.

5. A proposed rule or amendment will be dismissed on reaching a majority of three votes against.

6. Each player can only have a maximum of one proposed rule or proposed amendment up for voting at any one time.

7. A player can dismiss their own proposed rule or amendment at any time during voting.

8. Each player is limited to three successful rule or amendment proposals per day.

9. Proposed rules, amendments and votes must be clearly declared and visible in thread. Rule proposals should include a category to be listed under in the ruleset. The initial categories are "Core rules", "Win conditions", "Posting restrictions", "One-time rules", and "Uncategorised". Uncategorised rules will be listed under "Uncategorised".

10. Any disagreement over the interpretation of a rule must be settled by majority vote.

11. Anybody posting in the thread between 8pm and 8:05pm on a Thursday will be added to the “NHS Haters” list, a copy of which will be maintained in the first post. The purpose of the list will be defined by later rule proposals.

12. Anyone on the NHS Haters list must mention Nigel Farage in a complimentary way whenever they post in this thread. It must be part of a proper sentence, and they can’t re-use the sentences. Exemption applies to any posts OrangeRKN makes that are purely for Nomic game admin purposes. Anyone on the NHS Haters list who fails to include a unique mention of Nigel Farage in a post will be docked 1 point.

Core rules Scoring points

14. No more than once on each new page of the thread, you may gain a point by making a post that includes the phrase "that's a good point".

Anti-RKN troll rules

17. If the thread goes 24 hours with no post, nobody wins, but OrangeRKN loses.

13. Every poster in this thread is to be sorted into an ODD or EVEN team based on the last digit of the timestamp of their first post in this thread.

The purpose of these teams can be clarified in later rules.

15. What goes on toast stays on toast

16. If at any time you have negative points, you go on toast.

Every player is individually located on a shared 2D plane using integer cartesian coordinates. Each player's intial coordinates are derived from the timestamp of their first post in the thread, with the hours in the 24 hour clock equalling their x-coordinate and the minutes equalling their y-coordinate.

Hopefully having the per-day restrictions on proposals from the start this time will help a little, but yes the nature of these games is that the rules quickly become difficult to keep up with!
