Something is going on in NK. The about turn has been extremely quick and bizarre.

My guess is they see where these sanctions are going to take them and they don't like the look of it.

Imagine the timeline where Trump is finishing 8 years in the White House with North Korea having completely changed from a rogue nation to a fledgling democracy. Impeachment and a single term presidency is probably the more likely but it's been a funny few years in politics.

IIRC, North Korean diplomats apparently regularly ask if Trump is legitimately a madman or just pretending. Fighting crazy with crazy may actually be paying off. :slol:

Although I can't trust NK just yet. It wasn't that long ago that Kim had his uncle assassinated in an airport. Trump's shift of foreign policy has probably helped but I imagine the sanctions has had greater impact. Once they're relaxed, I'm sure NK would just revert back to being the rogue nation.

NK aren't giving up anything, it's Trump and South Korea who's shifted position. Trump's said he's prepared to meet Kim, which was a meeting offered to Clinton but Clinton wanted NK to make a good faith gesture first. Also on the sanctions side of things, they've just been moved back to the level they were at in 2009.

Kim and Moon hammered out a joint statement that is short on concrete steps and heavy on aspirational goals. It’s mostly about holding more talks between the two side on issues ranging from families divided by the Korean war to transport links.

There’s one section about denuclearisation, but it only repeats the general idea that “the South and North have confirmed their common goal of realizing a nuclear-free Korean peninsula”.

Here are the highlights:

- They will hold talks on formally establishing a peace treaty

- Agreed to “urgently resolve” humanitarian issues of divided families

- The two sides will work together to “ease the sharp military tensions on the Korean peninsula” and defense ministers will meet in May

- Starting May 1, all propaganda activities, including loudspeakers and leaflets, will be halted.

- Moon will visit Pyongyang in the autumn.They agreed to establish an inter-Korean joint liaison office in Kaeseong

It's just weird how quickly it went from FIRE AND FURY, to Kim popping over the border for a friendly chat.

I am not sure if we will ever know why this turned around so quickly, but it just seems suspicious. I guess this is how conspiracy theorists feel about everything.

I dont know if anyone said it in this thread, but there are aerial photos and reports from Chinese scientists which would seem to indicate that the NK nuclear testing facility actually collapsed after the final test. That would provide some basis for a quick turnaround and apparant willingness to abandon current strategy.
