According to Newsnight. Last year it was nearly ice-free, now apparently it's completely clear and passable to ships. Newsnight's feature on it, or a preview anyway.

TAKE THAT CAL!

That's good news. Should stop the old folk falling and hurting themselves this winter.

Why is this even news? The Northwest Passage - as anyone who knows their history of great explorations is well aware - regularly freezes and thaws. It's not always dependable; some years it remains frozen from year-to-year, other times it thaws out. So just what the hell is newsworthy here?

Oh. I get it. Because it's thawed out it's confirmation that man-made climate change is to blame. Sorry, I forgot that's how that works. How silly of me.

For the first time in recorded history, it is completely ice free and safe for non-ice ships. This has not happened before. It has thawed on occasion, but never that we know to this extent.

Erm.... if the northern polar icecap totally melts it wont really matter to tide rise, only the southern one will cause a dramatic rise in global tides.

The big problems surrounding the melting of the Arctic sea ice are mainly territorial in nature, e.g. who controls the northwest passage, who gets to probe for oil and where, etcetera.
