Now the PS4 and Xbox One are coming to the end of their lives I thought it might be nice to see how people's top 10 favourite games has changed. Do the new games blow retro titles out of the water or see you still waiting on something to top Golvellius?

To get things started mine would be:

1. Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
2. Secret of Mana (SNES)
3. Breath of the Wild (Switch)
4. Perfect Dark (N64)
5. Zillion (Master System)
6. Pokemon Go (Mobile)
7. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
8. Forza Horizon 4 (Xbox One)
9. Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast)
10. Fable 2 (360)

I think the biggest surprise was how many hours I've ploughed into Pokémon Go.

My top 10 console games in no particular order:

GTAV (PS4)
GTA: Vice City (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)
Batman: Arkham City (PS3)
Skyrim (PS3)
Streets of Rage 2 (Mega Drive)
Breath of the Wild (Switch)
Minecraft (PS4)
Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4)
Mass Effect 2 (PS3)

Current generation has knocked a few older games out of the ring, but there are some stone cold classics that I don't think I'll ever see replaced. I haven't even played some of the apparent best games of this generation yet so I'm sure when I get round to sampling the delights of Spider-man and God of War that list may need updating again.

I really need to start keeping a note of my top 10 games somewhere, every time a topic like this comes up I realise that I have to think it over again as I never have a record of what I thought last time!

That's exactly what I did. Probably missed something really obvious too, like Daikatana or Umbrella Corps :shifty:

Happily(?) I have it all written down:

10. Meteos (DS)
9. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (3D) (N64/3DS)
8. Mario Kart 8 (Deluxe) (Wii U/Switch)
7. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch*)
6. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (DS)
5. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii**)
4. Metroid Prime (GameCube)
3. Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door (GameCube)
2. Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)
1. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)

Note the use of slashes. On their own neither MK8 nor OoT would have made my top ten, but their latter incarnations patched up some flaws/signs of ageing. Anyway, not bad for the Switch, although it’s not the ‘end of a generation’ for me.

* Should really be slashed with every Nintendo home console since the 64 building up to this.
** Or GameCube, or Wii U. I only played it on Wii, but the shoddy motion controls probably mean that’s the worst version. Does not apply to BotW where portability means the Switch version is comfortably the best.

It's impossible and changes every time, so I leant heavily into "favourite" this time and have gone with games I will continue to happily replay forever:

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (GBC)
Jak II (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2)
Star Wars Battlefront II (PSP)
Mount and Blade: Warband (PC)
TimeSplitters 2 (PS2)
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (PS2)
Steep (PS4)
Skies of Arcadia: Legends (GC)
Fairune Collection (Switch)

By that measure, only Steep appears emphatically from this gen. Fairune creeps in as a collection of older games. Technically you might count Mount and Blade too - it has a console release on PS4. Link's Awakening has a Switch remake which is practically as good.

1) Fallout 3 (Xbox 360)
2) Mad Max (PS4) New!
3) Pro Evolution Soccer (PS1 / PS3 / PS4)
4) The Last Guardian (PS4) New!
5) Portal 2 (PS3)
6) Fallout 76 (PS4) New!
7) Wii Sports Resort (Wii)
8) Championship Manager '93 (Amiga)
9) Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
10) No Man's Sky (PS4) New!

New! indicates a current gen game.

It's hard to compare games of old to more recent ones; memories fade and recent experiences gain greater focus. For me, the PS4 is proving to be a beast of a gaming system with five entries in my all-time top ten.

Edit: Dang! I forgot about Dark Souls!
Edit2: Okay, it'll be #11. May go higher up the chart when I return to it!

There are no Zelda games between Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild so I don't know what you're all on about

Star Wars Battlefront 2005 still remains at the top of the all-time list, but there's quite a number of new games that have been added over the years.

-Star Wars Battlefront 2 [2005]
-Forza Horizon 4
-Pokémon Omega Ruby
-Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
-The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
-GTA V
-Kingdom Hearts 2
-Sonic Heroes
-Super Mario Odyssey
-Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

That list is from the beginning of 2019, though with the little change it has seen since I seriously considered it in 2017, I don't think there is much that would ever be added. The only major change is the Sonic rep dropping from near the top to near the bottom, but as clearly seen, it is flooded with games from this current generation.

The only changes I can really see happening to it are both Forza Horizon and GTA being replaced by their next-gen efforts. Same could be said for Breath of the Wild if the follow-up can somehow outshine the first. I doubt there'll ever be a Sonic game that can beat Heroes any time soon, and with the way the main Pokémon games have been going recently, the same can be said for that series as well.
