Nintendo. My goodness! I imagine people are picking it up for the back catalogue then, I think Wii Music is going to be a slow burner - now its done hopefully Miyamoto will start working on more traditional games.

LBP did really well, wasn't out that long was it?

I expect the 360 to shift a bit more hardware next month due to GOW, I imagine thats going to be a system seller.

Nintendo press-release:

WII AND NINTENDO DS TOP OCTOBER U.S. SALES

Nov. 13, 2008

Wii™ and Nintendo DS™ topped the U.S. sales charts and combined to sell more than 1.29 million units in October. Nintendo sold 803,210 Wii consoles and 491,176 Nintendo DS systems in October, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. These figures bring the lifetime U.S. sales for Wii to more than 13.35 million and Nintendo DS to more than 23.02 million, extending their leads as the best-selling hardware of this generation.

Nintendo's total hardware unit sales represent a 25.7 percent increase over October 2007. They also account for 59.3 percent of the industry's total hardware unit sales.

Wii Fit™, the game that combines fun and fitness, sold nearly half a million copies in the United States in October, six months after it launched. The lifetime U.S. sales for Wii Fit now total more than 2.83 million.

"Nintendo provides consumers with the best value not only among video games, but also among most entertainment options," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Nintendo also provides an incomparable range of experiences that everyone can enjoy, whether you've been playing for years or are just getting into video games."

Three games made for Nintendo systems placed in the top five best-selling games of the month, including Wii Fit™ at No. 2 with 487,234 copies sold, Mario Kart Wii™ at No. 4 with 289,869 copies sold and Wii Play™ at No. 5 with 281,844 copies sold.

Go Fable 2.. fantastic news. Love the game. Well done Lionhead.

LBP: Not massive but good start for a great game that will sell over time.

Well done, Fable 2!

I wonder if Guitar Hero will pick up in November, or whether its (comparatively) lacklustre performance is the first genuine shock of the silly season. I'm reticent to say anything at this point, as I seem to remember it being a relatively slow starter last year too.

The lols continue over at UK Resistance...

AMERICAN HARDWARE SALES (OF EUPHORIC SEXUAL GLORY)
Our brave friends across the Atlantic are continuing to STICK IT TO and RIGHT INTO Sony, with PS3 sales DOWN 18% during October. Despite the launch of some gooseberry fool user-generating, administrator-deleting content game about being a teddy bear and having your hard work removed that was all the rage for about 36 hours. Here's a list.

US HARDWARE SALES FOR OCTOBER, 2008

    Wii: 803,000
    DS: 491,000
    360: 371,000
    PSP: 193,000
    PS3: 190,000
    PS2: 136,000

ANALYSIS:

Selling fewer consoles when you've got your most important game of the year out AND it's nearly Christmas is a 10/10 on the SEGA Saturn UK Launch Disaster Scale.

SOFTWARE SALES EQUALLY SHAMBOLIC

1. 790k - Fable 2 (360)
2. 487k - Wii Fit (Wii)
3. 375k - Fallout 3 (360)
4. 290k - Mario Kart (Wii)
5. 282k - Wii Play (Wii)
6. 270k - Saints Row 2 (360)
7. 231k - SOCOM (PS3)
8. 215k - LittleBigPlanet (PS3)
9. 202k - NBA 2K9 (360)
10. 193k - Dead Space (360)

Yep, its nice to see such a British styled game doing so well in the US. I hope this will lead to more games from Lionhead and maybe even an update to Dungeon Keeper (I can dream).

Incredible Wii sales once again but not particularly impressive on the software side.

Great 360 sales on the hardware and software side and it has proven to be the third party king once again.

The PS3 sales are poor but I think Little Big Planet has done ok. SOCOM is obviously selling on it's name alone. Sony probably wish the PS3 was doing the same, as one of their 'genius' executives predicted after E3 2006.

Wii Fit sales are insane see if sony put in 50% of the effort in marketing as Nintendo did with Wii Fit I'm sure LBP would be further up.

Big N blitzed europe and the US with a massive marketing campaign, i cant remember the last PS3 advert that was good.

Wii Finally Passes PSP now only the DS and PS2 which is in a league of its own.

I wondered, would people have rather seen another Guitar Hero just guitars rather than the whole band as Rockband 2 LTD being only at 600k i mean thats not really a huge amount are people really wanting to spend hundreds of dollars on a band or would they rather stick with just guitars, especially in this climate.

I think the point KK was making was that given the current state of the economy, given the choice between a PS3 or a Wii/360, home console buyers aren't likely to go for the PS3, it being by far the most expensive.

Obviously not everyone's completely skint given those numbers, they might just be more careful with their purchases and the PS3 at the moment is the 'risky' option given the price of entry.

Some Sales Stats:

“Guitar Hero: World Tour,” across all platforms, sold 534,000 copies combined, according to NPD.

The Wii version, however, sold accruing 183,000 copies sold.
Xbox 360 version topped the Wii version, selling about 191,000 units

Comparatively, “Rock Band 2″ sold 363,000 copies on Xbox 360 alone in September.

GH3 sold increcdibly well on Wii i believe beating out the 360, i feel activision may enjoy good sales with Gh and Wii/DS

KKLEIN wrote:Sony could have the greatest line up ever conceived in the next 6 months & it wouldn't matter. The console is just too expensive. If you can't afford it, you can't afford it. I want an Aston Martin. Doesn't mean I can have one. It's the same concept with the PS3, just on a much smaller scale. Couple in the fact Americans are on their knees money wise, & the PS3 is the worst option out there.

It's true that price is the main factor here, but Sony seem to be content to leave it at it's current level. Furthermore their marketing of late has been half hearted to say the least. They are finally catching up in terms of software, but they seem to have let other success factors slip. Luckily, these issues are easier to address than a poor library, they just need to take action.

Something they bring up on this weeks 1upyours. Its worth noting when some of those games were actually released.

LBP had 3 days of sales to get to that 215K Wii Music had about 10 to get to 81K.

Its far far too early to call either of them on bad sales (especially LBP).

Just hope these poor figures from the PS3 will force Sony into another price drop. I wouldn't mind a PS3, just because it's the best value Blu-ray player.

If any genre's going to suffer in the current economic climate it's the 'Yearly, Hugely-Expensive Plastic Instrument Music Game' genre.
