Developers: Square Enix, Acquire
Initial release date: 24 February 2023
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows
Composer: Yasunori Nishiki
Publisher: Square Enix
Series: Octopath Traveler
Genres: Role-playing Video Game, Adventure game

Octopath Traveler II is an upcoming role-playing video game developed by Square Enix and Acquire and published by Square Enix. It is a sequel to Octopath Traveler (2018), and the third entry in the series after the prequel mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent (2020), though it features a new cast of characters and setting separate from prior games. It is scheduled for a worldwide release on February 24, 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Windows; it is the first Octopath game released on PlayStation platforms.

Story
While Octopath Traveler II retains the same structure of following eight separate character's stories throughout the game, it follows eight new characters in a new setting separate from the prior games. It takes place in the world of Solistia, a setting that is more modern than the prior game's medieval setting, which is presented more like something from the nineteenth or twentieth centuries. The game's main cast includes Agnea, a dancer; Partitio, a merchant; Hikari, a warrior; Osvald, a scholar; Throné, a thief; Temenos, a cleric; Castti, an apothecary; and Ochette, a hunter. A character's occupation generally ties in to the character overarching goal; the dancer Agnea is on a quest to become a world famous entertainer, and the merchant Partitio is on a quest to make money and end poverty. Hikari's story follows his quest to return home after being haunted by previous battles, Osvald is on a quest for revenge on a man who ruined his life, Throné is on a quest for freedom, Castti and Temenos are on separate journeys related to personal discovery and truth, and Ochette is searching for creatures of legend. The characters' stories intertwine more than in the prior game.

My major problem with Octopath 1 was how the eight stories didn't interact at all, and it looks like they've fixed that. Here for this!

Gimme!
Loved the first one, even if the stories didn't diverge, I found it really enjoyable. Really looking forward to this one!

Really enjoyed the first, so thrilled they’ve announced a sequel.

Plus, Octopath music coming as DLC to the new Theatrhythm game.

Mine was the grinding, there's no indication of whether that'll be different

Still going heavy on the depth of field effect I see.

Yeah the grinding was the killer for me, could have been alleviated a lot by having new characters match your average character level.

The grinding never bothered me. The difficulty spike with bosses was next level though

Adored the first. Worth it for the soundtrack alone. Still need to get Triangle Strategy.

Ah! I recall that TWA spoke of this, too, IIRC...

It could be. They usually had an attack that could wipe you out very quickly and you either had to be strong enough to tank it or find a tactic to deal with it. Which could mean dying a few times.

The final final post credit boss bit is pure BS though. Amazing pixel art though.

Fell off the first one hard when it just got to be a slog, and quite early on also. The idea is good, but if the individual stories of each character are bland well.... it doesn't work. Knowing I had to run through 5 more characters' stories filled me with dread and then I heard there's not a lot really to do after that.

See, I really loved the combat of the first game and grinding never was an issue. The old style combat brought me back to RPG games I grew up with and loved. I've mentioned before but the biggest issue I had was having to grind for the sake of the story bosses. I don't mind grinding of optional ones but the difficulty spike when you came to a boss was next level!

The bosses were usually at the end of each new characters story arc so we are probably complaining about the same thing. I had zero issues with the combat system, I prefer the older ones. Chained Echo's has an excellent old school combat system but SO FAR doesn't seem like you have to grind as bad.

It looks gorgeous though, I'll give it that but personally I'm waiting for the FF Pixel remasters coming to switch, they SHOULD be cheaper individually.

Chained Echoes

Thing is, Chained Echoes had the Overdrive system, which means that despite its age it felt like it did something new still. I feel no nostalgia for standard turn-based battles, they're just unambitious and dull to me. The class system and breaking system at least added something to Octopath 1.

I just hope they don't hide the tying together of the story paths behind and stupidly hidden superboss this time. :dread:

Is anyone else playing this? I'm quite enjoying it so far.
