People frequently unite under national banners, which would mean designs patterned on those of some national flags could prove useful starting points. Religions still hold sway of billions of people, which means that their core symbols could also be used. Other areas you might look to are history, literature, even biology, cinematography and science fiction. Unifying symbols are everywhere.
You're right about the human form though, which is why it'd be strawberry floating awesome to go to work in an office somewhere in the torso of a gigantic stone and steel equivalent of the Colossus of Rhodes.
