I always find it interesting when the class issue comes up in these situations.

"strawberry float these middle class wankers with nothing better to do and their parents who will bail them out!"

Sounds to me like an optimal use of resources. Is it better for a "working class" person to choose to protest instead of going to work, get fired and/or arrested then end up totally strawberry floated for attempting to exercise their limited political sway? Is that the only valid position you can protest from? Why is allegedly having less to lose in a situation a bad thing for trying to make progress?

Sure, agreements or disagreements about the point or execution of a protest can be important and may be worth debating. But making weird assumptions and trying to put limits on exactly which members of society check the right boxes to be "allowed" to protest certain things or in certain ways seems like getting stuck on the wrong details.

Whenever anyone doesn't have a valid argument to make, they resort to worthless tropes. A classic example is the one that has been dragged up here, one that everyone will have already heard about, but let us still gaze upon it in all its Latin and Wikipedia glory:

Ad hominem (Latin for 'to the person'), short for argumentum ad hominem, is a term that refers to several types of arguments, most of which are fallacious. Typically this term refers to a rhetorical strategy where the speaker attacks the character, motive, or some other attribute of the person making an argument rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.

Well done to the posters in this thread who have exposed themselves as fallacious fools :datass:.

The middle and lower class bickering amongst themselves is exactly what the ultra rich want. It means they can get on with destroying the planet in peace.

Makes sense. They don't take action based on a person's protected characteristics. They take action based on visibility and whether organisations take money from climate-damaging companies. If Pride take money from Shell (for example, I don't know if they do, but I'm aware of some controversy over the funding arrangements) and the MCC take money from JP Morgan, it's not fair to only target the cricket match and not the other major event that is being used in greenwashing.

Edit: yep, it was Shell, cheers Knoy!

EDIT: In this specific case, they appear to be talking about London Pride using United Airlines as headline sponsor:

twitter.com/JustStop_Oil/status/1674633978559733761

Sadiq Khan has defended himself against claims of “rainbow-washing”, after refusing to criticise Pride in London’s decision to make United Airlines its headline sponsor.

The mayor was also challenged about the fact that United Airlines covered the cost of him and his team to fly to, from and across America last year, thought to be worth several thousands of pounds.

Zack Polanski, the Green Party’s deputy leader and a member of the London Assembly, accused Mr Khan of failing to show “climate leadership” by not criticising the sponsorship decision.

4. The following people are to be released from their captors: In Northern Ireland, the seven members of the New Provo Front. In Canada, the five imprisoned leaders of Liberte de Quebec. In Sri Lanka, the nine members of the Asian Dawn Movement.
