Presenting the question like that is dangerous enough. It's a kind of push polling - it sets up a false equivalence between yes and no by presenting both as legitimate, acceptable opinions, and it suggests to anyone being asked that banning protest must be a common opinion that they should consider and that it is reasonable for society to consider.

It's not a reasonable question for our society to consider, banning protest would go against the fundamentals of a free democracy. Responsible media should not indiciate it as an open debate or legitimise the stance. Even though the vast majority can be seen to disagree and support the right to protest, it makes the alternative more acceptable - should a government make moves to ban protest (as our current government already has and wishes to do moreso), people who have been subjected to polls like this may think "well I don't agree with it, but the government can do that" because it has been framed as a debate, rather than thinking "this cannot be allowed to happen".

You're absolutely right, IMHO, Orange, but personally I wouldn't read too much into it. Most media is now geared towards "outrage" just to try and get some eyes on their paper/website. They *want* to wind us up and cause us to get a bit annoyed.. and post letters/responses about it. They sure don't want us thinking "yeah, that sounds okay... so I won't read any more and will move on to something else".

I'm thinking about making my "jawa asks..." thread titles a wee bit more provocative in order to drive more interaction ;-).

I joke about assaulting a 25 year old standing on someone else's pool table (an indisputably funny image) and there is uproar, another jokes about decapitating a 69 year old and it is met with joy and adoration.

Fine, fine margins.

1. I wasn't joking.

2. If you love IDS so much, then you can sew his head back on and strawberry float him. Which works very well with your username.

Some people will fantasize about the protesters being beaten up or call for them to be hanged. Some people will do nothing. Other people might consider their usage of oil, change things in their personal lives, vote for greener MPs, councillors, or join environmental groups.

how many times does it have to be shown that its not the end consumer that needs to adjust their habits, but the captains of industry

great ill use less electric, less fuel, eat local, carry my shopping on foot in my arms - huh some megacorp burned more energy in a day than i would in two lifetimes? i better start weaving my own clothes too

100% agree. But that's only going to happen with changes in regulation. Which requires increased public awareness and/or changes in government

Better they disrupt a Snooker match for a bit rather than gluing themselves to a lane or two of the M25 in my opinion, that is just ridiculously dangerous.
