What are people's thoughts on this? I joined an online dating site for the first time last year.. So far I've had 2 real-life meet ups.

The first time we played Mario Kart, which was good (if a little awkward).

The second time I met someone for a walk. As I was waiting for her I could see another, more attractive, man standing around nearby. I felt the dread of her assuming him to be her date, only to be disappointed when realising her mistake. That's exactly what happened next. :fp: We then walked around for an hour.

Any other experiences/thoughts generally?

I had a great time on Tinder when I was single for 18 months before getting back with my missus. It's a shame it's considered a bit of a faux pas to use it when married really.

Met my wife on OkCupid when I moved to London in 2012, I was freshly single in the big city and thought it was the most efficient way of seeing who's out there, and I was never the "go out on the pull" type anyway.

Hated it every time I've tried it and don't think I'd try it again.

I keep thinking about trying it as I really don’t have much luck meeting people the traditional way but then realise I have next to no pictures of myself I’d be happy using, I’d probably sound boring as anything in whatever profile I would write as well, so yeah never got round to trying it yet

I’ve had my successes with these things and each app and site has a different flavour of person on there, but it’s undeniably a mentally draining and personally invalidating experience

commodification of people down to an easy to digest and discard meat market, but it does work for getting your hole

haven’t met anyone for the first time in the real world for years now, always on an app

Met my fiancée on Bumble three years ago. Didn't like the app (seemed to be full of fake profiles) but it worked for me so I can't really complain.

Years ago it was looked on as a bit sad, but it seems to be the normal way of doing things nowadays.

I met my wife on Match.com back in 2006. I've no idea how good Tinder and the like are, but it sounds like people have plenty of success using dating apps.

Tinder was the watershed moment for online dating in terms of how sad it was considered.

Going into a bit more detail, I've never had any success with online dating and its never done my metal health any good. I always come off of whichever site I'm signed up to at the time feeling worse than I did signing up. Then again "regular" dating hasn't really worked out for me either. I've pretty much given up on trying to find someone, I just don't think it'll happen to me. Which is fine, I'm not sat here thinking the world owes me a relationship or anything, I'm trying to get myself into a place where I can be happy alone.

At the end of a very long relationship, I tried Tinder for a bit.

I hated it. I found swiping left and right on people very dispiriting - I couldn't do it for longer than a few minutes at a time without feeling hugely sad.

I met one person which was the most awkward hour I've ever spent in my life (but it was during Corona, so nothing was normal). So I got rid.

But, at the end of the day, I still think it's a better system than randomly bumping into people in real life if it's a relationship you're after. Most of the weddings I've been at in the last few years have been people that have met online.

Still no luck for me in using them, but I'm still not massively invested in using them. Should probably review my profiles, see about adding another picture or two if I get out further than I usually do (ten pictures of me at the same bit of canal probably isn't going to go down too well). I know that I'll get somewhere eventually, so it's not really worth any time worrying over. Might try and check Plenty of Fish again, just to see if my original haunt can see me some success.

Not gonna lie, 10 pictures of you at a canal has serial killer vibes

I don't think there's a version of the Bristol Pusher around here. Maybe I could pretend to be one.

I met my fiance on OkCupid over ten years ago, so it worked for me, although if I was single and looking now I would probably be wary as it seems much more of a minefield now it's become more popular.
