On the flipside it helps me focus on the game I'm playing.

Yeah this is a solid plus for physical.

I was reflecting on this only the other night - the move to digital combined with the oodles of cheap/free stuff that gets thrown at you these days can often leave you in a state of having too much choice available at any one time which makes it harder to focus.

I keep finding myself suffering from a bit of analysis paralysis where I just can't decide what to play from what is available!

It's like the Netflix effect, I often prefer to turn on TV and watch whatever is on Film 4 or pick a blu-ray or DVD off my shelf than start browsing through Netflix because I know I'll just get paralysed by choice with the latter. There is still loads of choice when it comes to my physical collection but there is something about its existence in physical space that makes it easier for me to parse.

Yep Netflix and the like are a killer for it too. I think it's just a case of needing to learn to adapt and work with the new way in which content is selected in this day and age, my brain still finds it easier to parse a shelf as well.

Mind you I always had this problem when going into Blockbuster back in the day to rent a video, I'd spend forever browsing the shelves and second guessing what to watch! :fp:

Been playing this alongside The Witcher 3 over the weekend.

Was going well up until the first tree (although thanks to some crap enemies I’ve already dropped it to easy), I’m trying and constantly failing to escape it when it gets flooded :( I’ve got to a checkpoint part way up but it now seems overly reliant on yourself and projectiles being in the right place at the right time so you can jump off of them to progress. Any tips? Gone back to The Witcher 3 at the moment.

Edit, this one portion of the game has certainly soured it so far, been trying for another 30 or so minutes and just can’t get it, not sure if it’s just me or not but you seem fully reliant on all the enemies and yourself being perfect as with the level of the water.

3 hours into this and it’s absolutely wonderful

It looks and sounds beautiful, I love the atmosphere it has. Gameplay wise it felt a little simple to start with but with a few more abilities in action now it’s really starting to open up.

This is going to be one I don’t want to end I feel.

I’ve been playing a bit more of this today and it’s just lovely for about 95% of the time but for the other 5% it just drives me mad  this is mainly when the platforming has a spike in difficulty, similar to when escaping Ginso tree with you and the projectiles you need to bounce off being in the right place at the right time.

Finally escaped Ginso tree though and I’m on my way to restore what I imagine is the 2nd of 3 trees, the artwork and the music is just lovely though

Sounds like we’re in exactly the same place, that’s the point I got to last night too.

The Ginso tree escape was a little annoying but to be honest I did enjoy the challenge from the difficulty spike. It was very satisfying to complete. One checkpoint in the middle wouldn’t have hurt though :shifty:

On easy you do get a checkpoint about halfway through :shifty:

I found from watching a video on YouTube (just to see how close to the end of the escape I was) that I was unintentionally making it harder for myself than needed. I thought jumping off enemies was a very quick thing, didn’t realise you could hold X to line up your direction better :fp: once I realised that was a thing it was a load easier!

I'm not that far ahead of you guys, bloody gorgeous looking game and unlike Hollow Knight (another lovely looking game) it's a joy to play.

I wouldn’t compare the two games too much really, outside of them both being in the ‘Metroidvania’ category. I will say that both look stunning, have great music/sound effects (although Ori is probably the better of the two on both fronts in my opinion) and both ran more or less flawlessly on the Switch. There is pretty big difference between the two though.

Hollow Knight is much better on the combat, it had me massively frustrated at one or two points but the combat in Ori compared to Hollow Knight just isn’t as good, its still good but I find too many of the enemies quite cheap in dealing damage, there seems to be so many enemies who spew projectiles at you that know just where you’ll position Ori. Hollow Knight had these but nowhere near as often.

Ori is much better at the platforming side of things though when outside of combat and exploring the world. I also appreciate that you’re always pointed in the right direction to the next objective, I get that exploring is part and parcel of a Metroidvania game but I also find it really annoying sometimes where you feel like you’re constantly running around in circles and resorting to a guide every now and then.

Both superb games but having completed Hollow Knight and about 50% of the way though Ori after 5 and 1/2 hours I think Ori might just edge it on the whole so far.

Edit, just to add to this, Ori’s story is generally better presented as well, not saying Hollow Knight doesn’t have a good story behind it but the player seems to need to look for it themselves while Ori’s seems to be nicely presented along the way. Again both good but different, Hollow Knights lore is good to read up on though.

Anyway I’m on my way to the third tree now, think I’ll be sad to see the end of this game :(

Well I couldn’t put this down. 12 hours later, 99% complete (some charge balls knocking about I think) and I’m comfortable calling this a masterpiece. Absolutely loved it.

Well, I decided to finish this off last night. I got to the Mount of Haru or something about 3 years ago and hated the place. Well, the place is still a pain in the arse but finished it off. It's pretty good, but again I had a few years gap on it.

Sorry I was wrong. Before yesterday I last played it nearly 4 and a half years ago

Just completed it myself, on the whole it was superb, couple of annoying segments/difficulty spikes in there but you can forget those with the insane amount of positives from it.

Ended on 92% with a time of 10:36. Given how much I enjoyed it I’m tempted to go and get the last 8% of stuff but it ended so perfectly I don’t want to go back unless I’ll be playing through it again.

Started this today. First thoughts: would be much better and more effective without the gravelly gruff tree warbling.

Now that I’ve opened up some more movement options and the exploration is a bit more free form I’m bloody loving this. It’s gorgeous, the traversal is some next level gooseberry fool and its fun powering yourself up.

Easily in my top 5 games this year and might even be as good as Tropical Freeze.

Beat it! Ended more suddenly than I expected. 79% taking me 12:22 - probably a bit slower than most, but I struggled with some sections for a while.

Good 9/10 for me. Superb art direction and music, but not quite at Hollow Knight's level gameplay wise. Combat is as basic as possible, and the skill tree didn't feel meaningful in the way that the customisability of HK's Charms did.

One of the guys from Moon Studios posts on ResetEra, and he’s said the combat is something they’ve looked to improve in the sequel next year. Hopefully we get that on Switch at some point.
