What's your thoughts on this? I kind of agree with this backer that it was a rather shitty move. It's also another example of why I don't or ever will crowd fund.

I think what makes this particularly galling is how they basically used us backers for an interest-free loan,

They took our money, developed to the point where it was mature enough to attract external investors, then totally changed the game plan and fully expect us to withdraw our cash, since they're now out of the high-risk phase of the project that nobody but us actual fans would back and have a mature product that's been guaranteed external funding.

"They conned us into lending them the money, and manoeuvred it so we'd be sitting on the bill if the development project failed. For a game that sold itself based on community involvement, with backer builds and all, this is just awful.

Why are some gamer's so mad about Steam having some competition?

Is it really that inconvenient to have multiple game launchers?

It's not competition as it gives the purchaser no choice. It's the exact opposite.

Isn't that pretty much the role games developers use crowd funding for?

It's competition for the games companies who can choose to use Steam or other online store providers.
Surely having other options other than Steam is a good thing?

They're mad at devs signing exclusivity deals mid-stream. (See Metro debacle.) Supergiant didn't get any gooseberry fool for signing the exclusivity deal with Epic for Hades, because it was a game that wasn't promised on other platforms before only being made available on Epic's.

Another new launcher isn't an issue when the people running it don't have a history with security issues:

Compeition should be for the consumer, not for some company to command the market.

Exclusivity deals are not a good thing. They do not benefit the consumer.

While I agree the Metro situation wasn't ideal I still think the outcry about using anything other than Steam seems counter productive to me.

I do agree that some of the other options like the Ubisoft store is really, really terrible though with even obvious stuff like Beta keys being oddly hard to find :fp: .

I'm not trying to start an argument but does this also include games that are solely sold on Steam?

Yep. The more purchasing options the better for the consumer.

One of the devs said even if everyone gets a refund they'll still make money i.e. Epic paid them more than $770k.

It's still coming to Xbox and Game Pass. Looking forward to it.

The problem for me is the EPIC store seems woefully under developed to the point I wouldn't even call it a alpha. There is no throttling on downloads which is really annoying as I have dodgy internet at the moment.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

From what I understand the backers from China can't use the EPIC store as it's blocked so would need to wait a year to play the game.

i backed this and will be getting a refund, but less than what i paid i think because of charges. it's very unethical to charge people, not give them back the full amount they gave, while they make a fortune and make a game that would never have existed without backers.

btw does anyone know what i need to do to use full forum featurs some are locked?

imo anyway. there's probably rules saying creators can change anything and it's a risk for backers. not sure i expected better anyway from this developer.

i should add this makes me more doubt backing other projects. it's not just current backers that will be put out here - hundreds of people or more may not back other ideas and that affect annoys me more.

I'm really looking forward to playing this but a little annoyed that I'm basically forced into the using the Epic game store.

I hate having to use so many different launchers for games, Steam is just about tolerable, GOG Galaxy is alright although I rarely use it and Uplay is the work of the devil.
