The Personal Divergence Thread

I think people prefer to describe things as overrated because it somehow deflects the hardwired insecurity that comes with breaking from popular opinion. For some reason, it's harder to describe a personal divergence than it is to suggest that 'everyone else is wrong except me'. It's easier to cast judgment on other people than it is to admit to not being 'normal'.

My instinct is to jump on things like Love Island. How the strawberry float can anyone watch that shite? I despise the vacuous nature of things I would describe as Instagram culture, and I want to assert how overrated it all is. But perhaps that's because hundreds of millions of people love it, and I'm naturally nervous about not being part of the tribe, so I seek to delegitimise it.

Is Love Island "rated" though? There are a few million that watch and presumably enjoying watching it. But most of them would call it trash TV. And tens of millions of others would say it's shite.

Well that's certainly a strong list I'll give you that.

The likes of Community would have been heavily influenced by the comedy of S1-9 of The Simpsons though, so it is kind of odd to strongly dislike one and not the other! Are you sure it's not just your general dislike of animation?
