One thing I like is how locations change once you've completed them. I loved returning to Shroom City and speaking to everyone with new dialogue. Excited to return to The Great Sea next.

Tomous you are not on point here, you are not supposed to enjoy this entry into the Paper Mario series because it isn't like the early games.

I've never actually played the early games :shifty:

I did give Sticker Star a go and gave up half way through because of how bad it was.

I'm not entirely sure why but I bought this last night (and then Currys dropped the price by £2). I think it was the PlayerOne Podcast I was listening to during work that convinced me.

I like the game but I’ve not played it for a few days and I feel no real urge to go back and play it. I’m very far either (currently in the water velumental temple thing) but yeah, after the initial high I got from starting the game my interest has fallen off a cliff

Might try and stick an hour or so into it tonight and see how I get on.

I've been watching my partner play this. I haven't actually physically played much of it myself, but I've seen quite a lot of it now, so here's my thoughts!

I would say overall I do like the game. It's pretty funny which is a big boon. I think the writing is as good as it possibly could be given like 75% of the characters you run into are Toads(!). The world is very big and detailed. I like that pretty frequently the genre will shift and you'll be driving or sailing around, or solving puzzles and playing minigames. The dungeons and boss battles are actually very good.

The normal battles do get samey pretty quickly and you end up wanting to avoid them, even when there's a new enemy. I also personally think there could be a greater variety in character designs and that each area could have a slightly stronger "subplot", though I do understand the restrictions the developers were under.

It's not a 10/10 game but there's a lot there to like and I think it's pretty good.

Weird as Nintendo usually make such good water temples.

Question, i will spoiler it, it’s early on but just in case

I fought the water vellumental and landed on a tile which summoned the turtle one I picked up first. It had the animation and the ground Mario was on rose up, the then water vellumental then...... noth8ng happened?no damage was dealt out. What’s the point in the summons?

later in the battle the water vullmental will use an attack that can only be avoided by mario raising himself up on the earth platform

Ahh ok, so the special moves for the vellumentals are only useful at certain times in battles? You don’t use them to deal damage as such

some times in a wave battle youll see an enemy holding a magic circle and when you beat it you can use the circle to clear the battle field in an instant. for the most part though theyre for boss battle to avoid certain attacks or to weaken them

I think the fundamentals of the battles are a good starting point but they fail to explore it further. Because there is a "perfect" solution for each setup, it's only about getting that right. If you do, you just click through until the enemies are dead and there's not much to worry about after that. If you don't, you don't kill them and you try again.

I feel the system could have been improved by there far less perfect solutions and instead you having to work out a setup that takes you into a battle with more options. That could have added a little depth.

Nevertheless, the battles are pretty quick, easy to avoid, and not intrusive for the most part. And I still really like the bosses.

15 hours in and man, this is such a Nintendo arsed Nintendo game! I love it!

Sure, it’s not perfect, the regular battles aren’t super interesting and I am starting to avoid them, but that aside, this is an excellent game! The characterisation, considering we are dealing with stationary items, is on point. The exploration game play is varied, the music is delightful and it looks sublime.

The references to Mario lore are so deep and I must have laughed out loud multiple times at some of the stuff the toads come out with.

My 7 year old is keen to play too, so I’ve started leaving the toads and the treasures that I don’t need to progress the plot for her (normally I’d let her have her own save, but the puzzle aspects make this super hard for kids I feel.

If your on the fence about this, I recommend it, there’s more than enough here to make up for the average battle system and if you love Mario, I can’t see you not getting something from it
