Explains what Intelligent Systems have been working on and why Koei Temco did the bulk of Three Houses too.

It was more of a platformer.

Bits of both. It was definitely a weird one, but did at least have actual characters - even if lots of them were geometric shapes.

People hate on SPM for not being an RPG, but it's fine for what it is. The misaligned expectations seem to be the trouble rather than the game itself.

TTYD seems to be the best and worst thing to ever happen to the franchise.

Same goes for the previous two games, or any game that deviates a bit from previous games in the series despite it actually being good e.g. Splinter Cell: Conviction, Hitman: Absolution etc.

As long as it isn't like Sticker Star which basically punished you for playing.

TTYD is the only one I've not played, besides Colour Splash which I didn't know existed, is there a way to play it without a Gamecube?

As well as not being an RPG its also ugly, boring and has bad characters. Which is why people don't like it.

Conviction and Absolution weren't good though. Blacklist and the episodic Hitman games were.

It shows Paper Mario Styled Combat.

You can play it on Wii as well and I think that machine has been pretty much hacked to pieces. Probably on the Dolphin emulator as well.

Toads, Toads everywhere though

It’s clearly not like TTYD. So hope people aren’t getting their hopes up. I wonder if they know its gooseberry fool because it seems like a really odd decision not to have included this in the last Direct, given its out so soon.

It just looks like Colour Splash, but being optimistic for a second, with a non card/sticker paste battle system, which is only a positive thing.

I hope it’s the move in the right direction it looks like it could be. Shame they couldn’t shake off the brain dead Miyamoto ‘duh why not use only core Mario characters’ restriction though. Because that gooseberry fool made Colour Splash way more tedious than it could have been.

For those after the correct rating

PM - 8
TTYD - 10
SPM - 5
SS - 6
CS - 5

No way is SS better than SPM. strawberry floating hell.

Yep it’s definitely not got the platforming combat thing, but I still can’t see Mario having a partner in battle which is worrying.

Personally I loved Super Paper Mario

This one looks promising, battle system from the trailer seems to show a move away from the ridiculous card based systems seen in the past, will definitely be waiting for reviews though after Sticker Star and Colour Splash though.

By that logic neither Blacklist or the new Hitman games are good because they deviate from Conviction and Absolution. I actually liked Conviction at the time but I replayed it a few months ago and it does not hold up at all.

If those are your companions then apart from foldy Bowser they look chuffing dull.

To be fair I need to replay SPM as I never finished it first time around and may be kinder to it in light of the cliff face the series jumped off.

This is the most exciting game related news I’ve seen in ages - and it’s only two months away! Hype overload!

For me, the disappointment of the post-TTYD games is that it feels like that style is being retired, and it's been far from oversaturated. I like me some turn-based combat, and it was nice to effectively have a JRPG that doesn't have all of the... more questionable... stuff that plagues that genre. I rarely go back to JRPG's as the weeaboo stuff is just too cringeworthy, but TTYD is still effortlessly playable and enjoyabale to this day.
