Perfect scores from Famitsu and Edge are still rare but both have some confusing choices in their lists.

Starting with GTA IV, their 10s are mostly questionable at best.

Grand Theft Auto IV
LittleBigPlanet
Bayonetta
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Rock Band 3
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
The Last of Us
Grand Theft Auto V
Bayonetta
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Super Mario Odyssey
Red Dead Redemption 2
Dreams

I wouldn't call them "mostly questionable". GTAIV is the only one I've played that I'd take umbrage with. LBP, Skyward Sword, TLOU, BOTW and Odyssey are all 10s for me.

@Jen: Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is probably better than Super Street Fighter IV!

I'd guess it was a 9 but you never know with them.

Karl_ wrote:@Maf: Fwiw there's no way Super Street Fighter IV is a 10/10 fighting game. It's not even the best Street Fighter game.

What would you say was the best? I remember you, Winckle and a few others always praising 3rd Strike. Personally the best one I've played was SSFII Turbo HD Remix.

I really like both Third Strike and Alpha 3. I think Super Turbo is a lot of fun too.

Third Strike isn't perfect, it has some frustrating unblockable setups (Urien  ) and a couple of characters just aren't really viable (Twelve  ) and so on, but it's really good, with just really solid feeling design and both parries and selectable supers giving it a lot of depth.

I liked Super IV, it was fun and I played it a lot at Uni IRL, but it was slower than the old ones and I kind of disagree with some of the mechanics it introduced (focus is bad, ultras are bad, imo).

Full disclosure though, I moved on to anime fighters instead of playing SFV, so I'm clearly not a core SF fan :slol:

Indeed, the best SF game is obviously Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo :datass:

I wouldn't put much stock in game reviews in general, tbh. More often than not they're done by people with no real investment in the genre who'd be hard pressed to find their way around the controller, or who fear dropping below a 9 because of the rabid fan boys who'll rip them to shreds. Not to mention the inflated scores coming from publishers cherry picking who they send codes to.

Your best bet is to just find an independent YT or Twitch person who you know gels with you and is deep into the topic in question. I'm going to trust Maximillian when it comes to fighting games, just like I'm going to trust Donguri when it comes to character action because I know they know what to look for other than some journalist who can't figure out how to jump over a wall in Cuphead.

I can’t imagine that YouTubers are any more immune to fearing being ripped to shreds; and for all the claims about reviewers being paid off, I’d imagine YouTubers are far more fertile ground for a publisher wanting to bribe without bribing, if you catch my drift. No codes of conduct or workplace regulations at all.

Just find a reviewer you trust, scale 7/10 down to 5/10, and go from there. If that reviewer happens to be a YouTuber whose integrity you trust then the same thing applies.

Do you even get reviews on Twitch? I wouldn't have thought it a thing suited at all to live streaming. And yeah, youtube is even worse for publisher interference.

I get what you're saying though - you'd rather hear opinions on a fighting game from someone well invested in the genre, which is fair enough. I think fighting games are probably more prone to ill informed reviews than most genres though given their skill floor and competitive bias.

On the flipside, a review of smash bros would be more relevant to me coming from a casual perspective than from a fighting game enthusiast because that's the level I want to engage with the game on.

It's been a big thing for years now where any game that doesn't get a 9 or higher gets the "yikes!!1 will wait for a sale, no day 1 for me" reactions (see: Ghost of Tsushima).

Personally I buy games based on whether or not I enjoyed the developer's previous output. Couldn't give a gooseberry fool about reviews, too much nonsense surrounding them especially with the bigger studios.

Add another one who enjoyed Sticker Star, never played Colo(u)r Splash due to not owning a Wii U till basically now and the little I played I enjoyed. Had it pre-ordered and pre-loaded for a while now so looking forward to Origami King personally.

Pre-downloaded for my daughter, she's very excited.

It's her reward for her school report being exemplary.

Anyone done better than ShopTo's £43 price?

Edit: HotUKDeals tells me you can get it for £40.49 using the discount code GAME10

Gamespot - 8

With a newfound combat system that steals the show and offers a novel take on turn-based combat, its winking, nodding, and adventuring shine all the brighter. Its world and characters might not be the series' best, but it's still able to consistently throw left turns, good gags, and smart surprises at you. Each piece of The Origami King elegantly fits into its whole, taking its irreverent flair to new heights. The Paper Mario series has recently shown that being clever and being smart are two different things, but thankfully, it's once again managed to be both.

IGN - 7

The Origami King is a truly likeable game despite the shallowness of its new spin on gameplay. Its characters are winsome, its visual design is gorgeous, its world is fun to explore, and its storytelling is outside the box and playful. At the same time, however, it could be so much more. Combat is largely unfulfilling, and your journey as a whole lacks meaningful choices. For a series with RPG roots, that’s a real shame.

Currently sitting at 81 on Metacritic, sounds good to me! Can’t wait to play it

Reviews are putting it exactly where I expected-fun adventure with lots of laughs but a weak battle system. I'm not big on RPGs so I'm not too bothered by the battles. Have ordered
