I 100% accept that it's cringe and makes the game worse, but I actually laughed quite a lot at the blushy-crushy stuff. It was just so ridiculous.

Unpopular opinion, but I don't like the battle system from Mario RPG/Paper Mario/Superstar Saga/Thousand Year Door. I found it very tedious.

The most annoying thing about this trailer (and is also probably why some people don't like the empty, huge open areas) is that this looks like a game still in development, not a game due out in two months. Current theory is they had bigger plans for this, Covid messed things up and so that they'd have some games to launch Nintendo said "to hell with it, launch this game as is". If this theory is correct, it proves that Nintendo thinks the Paper Mario series is B-tier or less which is honestly quite sad. Especially now that Alphadream is gone with no word on if the Mario & Luigi series still exists.

From the information we have so far, I put this above Sticker Star and Color Splash but it doesn't seem to have the same feel as the original two and doesn't seem to have as detailed a story as Super Paper Mario.

Seriously Nintendo, all you have to do is remake the engine you had in TTYD and write a new story around it, new locales but same gameplay as TTYD. Really not that difficult. You struck gold with the original titles but now it seems like you're determined to make bronze.

There's no way 6 weeks into Covid Nintendo just went strawberry float it, release Paper Mario in July and leave out a big chunk of the game. That's not how Nintendo operate. Or how game development works.

Also, Nintendo have put a Paper Mario on everything except the DS since the franchise began. Its easily one of their most consistently franchises outside your top tier franchises.

So why does so much of this game feel so empty close to release?

We've only seen a two minute trailer. Way too many people overreacting when we know very little so far.

And this has likely been in devooment a good few years, probably not long after Colour Splash, looking at IS output.

Intelligent Systems have been working on this for a while (hence why Fire Emblem Switch was not made from them fully) so I doubt this is the case.

Would make sense though, many games from the past even the best ones that give me that deadline feeling to them. Wind Waker and Mario Sunshine spring to mind, both great games but camera issues in Mario and the missing temple and trigorce quest .... you ain't gonna tell me they are not top tier franchises.

Nintendo has a long history of just thinking "ah strawberry float it, ship it as is" with their games, so this is definitely what happend.

I mean... they have the Miyamoto philosophy, but they also have (for example) Wind Waker and Mario Tennis Ultra Smash.

I don’t think this is the case here however.

actually the missing dungeons in wind waker were scrapped early in development, not due to time constraints

Do you have a source for that? They've never explicitly said they cut two dungeons but:

Aonuma said:

First of all in terms of time for completion we had to delete two stages, which included some dungeons. Yet, of course, the volume is big enough, but we had to delete some elements we were originally going to incorporate in the game.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/i_zelda_gc

Miyamoto said:

At the end of the production we fought against the clock and there were parts that I was forced to approve even though it didn't feel complete...I apologise that we didn't fix the triforce hunt at the end of the game. It was slow and dull.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/news250705zelda

Also, when asked about them being added to Wind Waker, HD on Wii U Aonuma said they'd been repurposed in other games:

"Quite honestly, those dungeons we removed we used in other games, so we can't use them in this version!" he told me, with an apologetic laugh.

Those mini fire and ice dungeons were originally going to be full length and there would have been a dungeon on Jabun's island.

I think it's possible the Jabun island dungeon was cut early as a design decision but the fire and ice were cut late due to time constraints.

I won't lie, as a kid when I didn't really think about getting my money's worth from games I was strawberry floating PUMPED when I got the third stone I needed for "free" without having to do a whole dungeon. I imagine Link was probably feeling the same.

New goal: stealth-change every thread on the front page of Games into a Zelda discussion.

Who wants to take a crack at the PS5 one?

Anyone think Mel Gibson would be a good pick to play Link in a Zelda movie?
