Gamecentral wrote:In Short: One of the most relentlessly charming video games ever made and the best Paper Mario since The Thousand-Year Door.

Pros: One of Nintendo’s best scripts in years, with a sardonic sense of family friendly humour. Fun battle system and consistently imaginative world design that always rewards exploration.

Cons: The lack of any role-playing systems means that combat is technically pointless. Lack of allies, and their abilities, is a real shame. The way money is handled is very odd.

Score: 8/10

Sounds like it's worth a purchase but the combat being meaningless is disappointing.

Any reviews mentioned the length of the campaign yet?

I'm dissapointed it's lost it's RPG roots as I seen it as a gateway to get my daughter into JRPG's.

If they bring back Mario & Luigi and give it a decent budget I’ll stop complaining about Paper Mario not being a JRPG.
If they bring back interesting character design (origami variants of the same old monsters doesn’t count) I’ll stop complaining about that.
If they give the battles a point that isn’t EXP (disposables don’t count) I’ll stop complaining about the lack of EXP.
If they give us an HD remaster of TTYD I’ll stop complaining about all of it for at least the next game.

I’m going to keep pining for now.

I do wonder if Nintendo looked at Mario & Luigi's dwindling sales and Super Paper Mario and Sticker Star's relative success and concluded "we need to drop the RPG elements".

People have been ‘reviewing the game it is’ they’re just not very good ones. Also the whole ‘don’t criticise something it isn’t trying to be’ argument is such a crap catch all attempt to nullify legitimate criticism and up there with Nintendo’s own best bullshit lines of ‘we want to do new and original things with a franchise’ to excuse their own lazy formulaic output for many previously quality series.

I don’t know why we should be celebrating a once great series’ decline and wallowing in mediocrity, but mentioning TTYD seems to be your latest ‘thing’ so whatever.

I am quite surprised at this getting a bit of a more positive reception than I was expecting and may go against my own plan and pick this up rather than Ghost of Tsushima as that’ll be £20 by the end of summer. Will watch some reviews and decide, I need something to play on the Switch though and reluctantly I would like to keep my run up with this series.

I thought it would make you laugh. But you really are a soulless monster.

EDIT: Wait, where’s that gif you used to post every 2 seconds, that’d be a better response.

EDIT: Found it

https://www.videogameschronicle.com/features/interviews/paper-mario-origami-king/

Tanabe: Since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, it’s no longer possible to modify Mario characters or to create original characters that touch on the Mario universe. That means that if we aren’t using Mario characters for bosses, we need to create original characters with designs that don’t involve the Mario universe at all, like we’ve done with Olly and the stationery bosses.

Whether a character becomes an all-time hit or not isn’t up to us on the development side; I think it’s more the case that characters that fans truly accept naturally end up that way. I hope that the origami siblings in Paper Mario: The Origami King will stay in players’ memories, even if they do only end up appearing in this title.

So basically, the reason we don’t see unique characters in Paper Mario is that Nintendo (Miyamoto?) prevent this. Really stupid on Nintendo's part, why even bother doing this??

That really makes me quite angry to read. Apparently it’s his fault that the stories have been grossly simplified though.

Nintendo have become much more rigid on how Mario's image is used over the years. Look at what he is now, compared to the Brooklyn plumber of the early 90s. I wonder if this less Miyamoto and more a wider ambition to increase the Mario brand even more. They are engaging in a lot more merchandise these days-Lego, the Universal theme park plans...and a movie is coming. Possibly that's resulted in far stricter control over the brand for external parties using it.

On the other hand, they let Ubisoft put a gun in his hand a few years ago so who knows :slol:

Agreed. I think it's clear the first 3 games were handled in a completely different way from the last 3. Where people go wrong is that it shares the Paper Mario name. Where people also go wrong is that regardless of what Paper Mario was, what Paper Mario is now is still very underwhelming and lacklustre in game design. Origami King looks better than Color Splash, which looked better than Sticker Star. But when the basis is literally mediocre at best, and you build off of already flawed fundamentals, there's not much you can do to really improve the underlying issues. It looks like Origami King has kept the terrible core game design of Sticker Star but are attempting to distract from it with better story, characters, different gameplay genre mechanics (driving, FPS sections, etc.). I'm sure Origami King is at least somewhat decent. I'd like to play it some day and form a non-speculative opinion, but from what I've seen and heard, it's just disappointing.

Also it's at 81 on Metacritic for anyone wondering.
