Doesn't seem to be any protests in the North, though given how Leave supporting the North was in general maybe that's not such a bad thing. Any turnout would probably be quite low and that would be used as propaganda by the right, "Look how poor the traitor turnout was"

Apparently there's one in Durham.

Any idea when? That's about 30-45 minutes by car so close enough to go if I'm around for it

It started at 6pm, apparently.

EDIT: 5pm. I'd go, but I'm drunk so I can't drive.

Unfortunately, we probably don't have the strong, well-organised labour movement necessary to hold a meaningful general strike. I feel many people have forgotten that unions aren't just about standing up to your boss, they are also the best way to stand up to the government.

I hope that there will be strikes, it's not impossible that the unions we have left pull together and take action, but we seem to be lacking that element of militancy now and I'm a bit pessimistic.

I don't see any other way that we can stop this.

We can’t stop it.

The country is split between those supporting Johnson, those opposed and those too apathetic to care.

Those opposed are a sizeable number but most will not strike or protest.

And Johnson is the type of banana split who’d set the army on any mass protest.

Ah, too late to go now then, probably be winding down before I could get there. Was hoping it might have been this weekend.

Would it be going too far to call this a fascistic coup? I mean, Johnson has used legal means to try and thwart anti-no dealers so it’s not like a violent overthrowing of democracy.

It's a proto-coup at the moment. Boris has normalised the idea of him going above Parliament and is testing whether anyone really cares enough to stop him. If they don't, he can find an excuse in the aftermath of Brexit to be a "strong leader who won't let Parliament stop him doing what the people want!" full-time.

Fascist coups don't have to be a military take-over. Hitler became dictator more-or-less legally.

There is a game called Secret Hitler which I've always wanted to try. Although living through a game, somewhat takes the shine off it.

People won’t do anything until it starts hurting them personally. And that won’t be until it’s too late to stop it.
