Are you not a fan of the genre, or was there some other reason why you didn't like it?

I guess I'm not the biggest fan of the genre but it looks and plays like a duller browner Diablo 3.

I am a fan of the genre, and Path of Exile is an excellent game. If you like brighter shinier examples then I suggest Torchlight 2, or the forthcoming online Torchlight: Frontiers or Warhammer: Chaosbane which comes out soon.

Downloaded it last night and was looking forward to giving it a go. On PS4 at least it suffers from extreme stuttering every few steps (frame pacing issues?) which is massively off putting. Will dive in again if they ever get around to fixing it.

Grim Dawn is probably the best game in the genre atm, it's a little bit rough round the edges due to the age of the engine it runs on (it uses a modified version of the Titan Quest engine) but the setting and story are great.

Yep, I love Grim Dawn (279 hrs played so far), and I just finished the Forgotten Gods expansion. Loads of good build customization in the game.

My only real issue I have won GD is that some of the attack skills can't be remapped to the left mouse button as they can in Diablo 3.

For example, the Arcanists Aether Ray which works a bit like D3's Demon Hunter and Wizards Rapid Fire and Energy Beam skills respectively (i.e. ridiculously overpowered), is pretty much unusable for me as I can't physically press the RMB.

I basically have to compensate by having loads of passive, devotion and item specific skills at all times, I have so much stuff flying round the screen that it now resembles a bullet hell shooter

Really? I know you have some physical issues but what mouse are you using? I've been able to remap all my main skills to whichever mouse button I want to. (I use left and right Mouse as well as two side thumb buttons and the middle mouse button - 5 total).
Sorry to hear of you having issues with that Ironhide. :(
