Path of Exile is a free online-only action role-playing game set in the dark fantasy world of Wraeclast. It is currently under development by Grinding Gear Games in New Zealand. New players are
being added continuously to the Closed Beta Test.

Just saw this trailer on RPS and thought it looked quite stunning for a free to play game. As the details mention it's currently in closed beta, but keys are being given out gradually if you sign up.

For anyone waiting to play Diablo III, I suggest that you try this. it's actually not too bad and scratches that ARPG itch until Diablo III or Torchlight II comes out. I signed up and got a beta key, and so far it's pretty good. It doesn't have the fast action of DIII, it's more slower paced, like Titan Quest, but the art style does remind me of the old Diablo games.

Well personally, I just bought a beta key for $10, along with 100 points of their currency. You can also waut for your name to be chosen in their random beta key giveaway system or you can just ask a forum member for a spare key in their forums.
I've played a bit more of this and i'm really enjoying it.

Hmm spending £6 to play the beta of a free-to-play game? Don't get me wrong, I'm tempted, and I know they're wording it like your kickstarting the game, but it does seem rather strange. If it was £6 for early access into the game I'd go for it, but I'm guessing your character will be wiped when they go from beta to launch.

There will be an open beta for POE this weekend, where players can try out the final character "Shadow" class.

For anyone interested there's a free weekend open to all.

This week, we announced the Shadow, our Dexterity/Intelligence character class. He prefers to use fast-hitting weapons such as daggers or claws to dart in and out of battle, while laying Traps or Remote Mines and controlling the flow of combat with deadly spells. You can read more about the Shadow here: http://www.pathofexile.com/classes/shadow

We're opening up the Path of Exile Beta to everyone this weekend, May 11-13, so that we can stress-test our servers in preparation for entering Open Beta. This Open Weekend is the ideal time to invite your friends to play the game with you. The Shadow class will be playable from this weekend onwards.

The public weekend in March was a huge success and attracted 47,000 players. We're keen to try to push that limit! There's a list of frequently asked questions about the public weekend here: http://www.pathofexile.com/publicweekend/

Today we deployed the 0.9.9 Beta patch, which has been described as the most important patch the game has ever had. In addition to adding ten new skills, four new support gems, a new quest, monster type and many bug fixes, it introduced a completely revamped monster AI and behaviour system. We're pleased to say that these changes have made Path of Exile more fun and challenging than it has ever been before.

Due to the substantial balance changes, we have migrated all existing Beta characters and items to the Legacy League (like we did with 0.9.8) so that there's a fresh economy and ladder in both the Default and Hardcore leagues.

This is a great opportunity for you to show your friends the Path of Exile Beta and play alongside them while exploring the new updates. We're hosting developer-run events at various times over the weekend, so you can show off the skills you acquired playing earlier versions of the Beta too.

I look forward to seeing you in game!

Worth a look

WTF!
I Literally stated that 2 posts above yours mate.
Anyway for people who are anxiously awaiting Diablo III on Tuesday it's definitely worth trying out Path of Exile to get your clicking death/looting fix. The game is actually quite good and different enough from Diablo III and Torchlight. Here is a screenshot of a third of the POE skill tree-

Preloads for the free weekend are available now. Log in and hit the download button on the top right. Front end is 6Mb, but you need to install and run that to get the other 4Gb of the game.

Ord I only reposted the information as I changed the topic title to notify people of the weekend, plus my post contains a bit more info. Wasn't trying to undermine what you wrote before regarding the free weekend.

How is this game anyway? Is it better than Diablo 3? Will I like this? The graphics look how D3 should of looked.

It's a nice game, certainly. I didn't play enough of it to give a firm judgement either way. The only problem you might have is that the only way to get it is via downloading the whole 4Gbs.

It's quite good. It's slower paced than Diablo III or the Torchlight games. In fact it kind of reminds me of Titan Quest. The atmosphere is pretty bleak much like Diablo II, and everything has that "grotty" rotten feel. The passive skill menu is gigantic and very intimidating too. Also there is no money in the game. They use a barter system when it comes to buying and upgrading items. I really like POE. it's different enough from the other ARPG games that are currently out there to give it a try.
If you can't get a free beta key then I would say it's worth the $10 for the key, even if it is just to support a small developer who is releasing an interesting game. They did have an open beta last weekend. I'm sure they will do another one soon.

I played the beta a while back and didn't like it at all. Everything about the world is very bland and boring. The graphics, while technically impressive, lack any personality or flavour. And that skill tree/clusterfuck of abilities is an absolute mess and gave me a headache just looking at it.
