It was, but the Federation always upheld utopian ideals, even if it still had some prejudices. They got around it by visiting dystopian planets, and having the argument being over whether they should interfere.

I'm undecided on the universe in Picard. I don't think they are doing a great job of showing this more isolationist federation, but maybe that will come in season 2. It's a great concept to explore and resolve, I just have my doubts on whether they can get there.

At the moment, without much Starfleet stuff, it feels a bit too much like every other sci fi.

Perhaps we should take off the nostalgia specs?

The Maquis didn't so much get kicked out as rebel. The point I was trying to make was that people living on earth would live a decent life even if they weren't emploeed. It is a post scarcity society after all.

Also the majority of the Maquis were settlers not members of Star Fleet.

There's a reason Roddenberry was "promoted" early in TNG's run. It was to get him out of the way, and let the writers work without being stymied by his "utopian vision".

If Roddenberry had his way, the Enterprise crew would not have held prejudices against Klingons in "The Undiscovered Country", and the film would have lost all of its message and meaning. Gene created a great framework, but Star Trek was truly defined by its writers.

They still lived in a utopia. Picard doesn't follow his framework at all, it's set in the moral grey world of all other TV shows of the last five years or so.

Lex, you're right - the Maquis rebelled against the Federation because their planets were given to the Cardassians, but up to that point, those settlers would have maintained Federation ideals, and I agree that Federation worlds should be utopic, since they are post-scarcity. However, she gave the impression of being down-and-out in her trailer, while the workers on mars also seemed disaffected, (probably all the swearing). It sets completely the wrong tone.

So yeah, you were spot on. I'm hoping it's not too late for this to be balanced-out somehow, perhaps with more positive representations of the Federation?

Better than last week

Icheb

A least stuff happened but the end result is the overall plot is still stagnant (and everyone and their dog saw X coming)

I wish we had more Seven/Picard but the short chat they had was good

Brilliant episode and bit extra for Voyager fans like me :D this series is brilliant so far, much better than the Netflix one.

Gutted about what happened in the cold open, as a fan of Voyager(and even the later seasons of Voyager).

Yeah, apparently he was not good to work with for reasons.

Different actor for Maddox, too, because Brian Brophy doesn't act any more.

Considering Picard is supposed to be French his French accent is bloody gooseberry fool :slol: .

Fantastic episode though.

There's an interview with the woman who played Diana Troy in TNG and she used Picard's accent to point out that French people are whipped out in Star Trek.

I enjoyed it, it was the first episode that had a clear plot and objective and didn't jump about all over the place. It's still running away from what Star Trek is meant to be as fast as possible though.

If you mean wiped out I wonder how they explain that?
Maybe they got hit hard in WW3 but even then I'd imagine a few other European countries would have also got clobbered into extinction as well due to our mutual defence strategy. I also find it hard to believe the UK would have not also responded to such an extent as to be also needed to be wiped out even after Brexit to a neighbour country being obliterated.

Maybe the English population in France expands so much it becomes the dominate culture. Or maybe England takes over France and we get an inverse 1066 with English culture becoming the dominant force in France.

The problem is it's normally very hard to wipe out a language.
Take Welsh as an example it's only spoken by a relatively few people in the UK but those that do are proud of the language and want to make sure it survives so it would be hard to kill off completely even if we for some unknown reason tried. Given the huge French population all over the world even if English did become the main language of Earth I still find it hard to believe the French language would die out even if France itself somehow ceased to exist.

Or maybe it does exist but nobody who isn't French can remember what it sounds like because of universal translators and the like.

We're not supposed to know exactly why at this point but her final words with Maddox make it clear that she regrets her involvement in their work:

"your contribution was essential"
"one more thing I have to atone for"

And that she's aware of something that neither we the viewers or Maddox are at this point:

"I wish you knew what I know, I wish I didn't know what I know, I wish they hadn't shown me..."

Presumably we'll learn what she's on about soon :dread:
