That would indeed be a massive disappointment.
Yes, by all means have old characters and maybe a few cameo's but it should be new stories just with a classic TNG vibe and overall look.

If that's what you're hoping for I'm not sure you'll get it to be honest.

Everything I'm seeing makes this look like a modern TV show with a very specific story it wants to tell, rather than the more story-of-the-week nature of TNG. I wouldn't expect too much "boldly going". Just about everything is going to be about driving the arcs that they set up.

I'm fine with that as the nature of TV has changed and I do prefer the more narratively focused shows we get now (I think it produces better writing and shows in general), but it does mean that you lose a lot of the stand-alone type of stories you might have otherwise gotten.

Yeah I wouldn’t be expecting more than a couple
of seasons at most, with a pretty contained main story. As much as it sucks to say, nobody’s looking at Patrick Stewart in 2019 and thinking ‘Let’s plan out a story for 8 seasons’.

By the TNG vibe I don't mean a single episode format I just mean the show is more positive than the recent Sci-Fi shows which are all dark and grim.
The set's need to be well light like TNG as well with a brightly and airy bridge.

Is that the episode where the Romulans implant false memories into Riker's head but get confused about his love for a hologram he specifically created and programmed?

OMG! :D :D :D Was not expecting to see Seven!!
This already looks a million times better than the Netflix one. But we need as much Star Trek as we can get :D

I think The Orville has shown that the classic Trek formula can be done and still work on TV. For me, The Orville tackled current day issues much better than Discovery did with some really great takes on transgenderism, feminism, fascism, xenophobia etc that Discovery just never got chance to tackle due to the story arch.

I actually feel a narrative driven Picard series has a better chance of working as TNG already did the social commentary thing, this is clearly about characters and book ending some of their storylines and tying up loose ends, and finally getting Trek back to looking forwards. It remains to be seen whether they will eventually go back to a new series with an optimistic take on the future again, which was always Gene Roddenberrys vision. Sci fi is so rife with distopian stuff again that the classic Trek philosophy would be a breath of fresh air in my opinion.

And it turns out it wasn't the Romulans, that was the fake twist. It was actually a lonely orphan from a species of memory manipulating aliens who just wanted Riker to be his dad. Riker accepts but it's never mentioned again. TNG in a nutshell there.

Still a great episode even though it's ridiculous.

Gave us the classic Riker "NO YOU CAN'T, DON'T EVEN TRY" line.

"Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager’s “The Doctor”) in early talks to reprise his role in second season of Star Trek: Picard" -

”I am pleased that they (CBS) have expressed interest in me. They have reached out to my agent about next season. So I’m looking forward to seeing what it is. As you know I play two characters, primarily the Doctor but also Lewis Zimmerman.”

If you have Seven, you need to have The Doctor. Their chemistry was the best thing about the later seasons of Voyager.
