I could see a direct attack on the home fleet, combined with a migrant crisis from the biggest enemy empire against the federation leading to calls from the leadership to be more protectionist.

You only have to look at real life, the US are by far the most wealthy and privileged nations with influence all around the globe, yet they are turning inwards and isolationist.

However, Kurtzman doesn't have a fantastic record of really concise storylines so I'm not sure they are ever going to do this justice. They seem to like to leave these things up in the air, never explaining anything and letting fans speculate. I'm not sure that works with such a detailed universe like Star Trek.

This is a Federation that has in the previous 30 or so years endured the Borg and the Dominion, and also has seen that it cannot always trust the Klingons (Duras etc), and can rarely trust the Romulans. The Dominion war especially brought out a more jaded and cynical side of the Federation. They were well on the path to isolationism.

Yeah, I don't think it's such a stretch to see them react this way.

I would add that Mars is at the very heart of the Federation, so I would expect a bigger reaction than something at the other end of the Quadrant.

Earth was attacked directly during the War

But was it's entire atmosphere set on fire?

It just seems that Mars got wiped the strawberry float out and considering it's literally next door to Earth I can imagine that being a bit of a shock.

Point is that I have no problem with it. Mostly because in the wake of TROS I've decided that I'm not going to sit and over analyse everything I watch for things that don't make sense and I'm just going to enjoy it.

Which I did. Very much so. Can't wait for the next one.

That video does a good job of explaining my problem with Star Trek Picard.

I'm not a Trekkie so I'm not the sort to get upset by incorrect lore. But years ago in the 90s I used to watch TNG on Sky when I came home and fall asleep to it. I do have a fondness of Picard Borg and Data humanity storylines which made it interesting for me. I watched the first episode of Discovery and it seemed okay. But this was great to see Picard on Earth, this felt like a true continuation of the world of The Next Generation and in HD, everything looked so good. I love the big budget (outdoor shots of French vineyards) and present day CGU. Also, Patrick Stewart as Picard is fantastic, he has charisma.

Also glad that the girl isn't Picard's relative.

This show should win all the awards including all the Gramy's(sp?) for the theme tune.

I also assume the viewing figures just say "Everyone watched!".

Just seen episode 2. I thought it was really boring, some conversations seemed to go on a few minutes too long and it felt like they really needed to cut to the chase.

Hope it improves next week but this episode was treading a lot of water.

It doesn't go up till tomorrow, doesn't it.

Lots of dialogue seems alright to me I thought that they whipped through stuff a bit too fast in the last episode. I'm quite psyched to watch it.

A little bit too slow and Picard didn't come off as well.

He came off as a doddering old coot in Starfleet HQ. No presence and no real attempt to explain justify. The admiral felt harsh, but not unreasonable given the rambling story he gave her. Lay it out. Tell her the story etc.

It's fine for scenes to be slow, but they should also advance the story/characters (e.g. last weeks). This episode not much happened and the story (on earth) is in pretty much the same spot.

Still enjoyed it - but last week's was miles better.

I really enjoyed the slower pace.
I think it fits with the fact that Picard is old and doesn't have the weight of presence he once had and he really can't do action. I thinki a return to slower pace and more plot is a great thing for Star Trek and long may it continue  .

I actually thought that was good storytelling. Picard's been out of the loop for nearly twenty years, he's unwell and he's getting old - of course he doesn't have the presence he did in TNG era. He rambled on a little and was given short shrift. What they need to do now is show him sharpening up over time and re-asserting himself.

Episode 2 was not 'exciting' in a shooting kind of way but in its own understated way was fantastic for allowing us to spend time with Picard without the need for forcing action, a lot did happened. There was a lot of talking, but in a good way. Conversations revealed naturally revealed history and motivations, they set up character and story. There was the occasional, fleeting, aural nod to the original or TNG theme.

I hate overly literal allegories because they become ridiculous when you compare them to what they represent, should we believe androids are immigrants on Western countries? It works better if it's not literal and you just say, 'this lot didn't understand or respect that lot enough'.

Also, my worry was that at the end of the final season of Picard they would have him die as would befit a hero so all the fans can be sad. But I would rather they give him a true happy ending on his vineyard, content and happy. It would be in keeping with the upbeat series

Haven't they basically told us that Picard is going to die from whatever illness he has?

He can't though as he has another 5 more series of this to go after the first 2. Maybe after 7 series he can pop his clogs but not before and only if Q let's him die.

That brain "defect" is what is going to cause Picard to ascend to the Q Continuum at the end of season 1. After that the show will be about his adventures in time and space/

Just watched episode 3 and thing are coming on nicely.
I'm loving the slower pace and concentration on story rather than action it's what Trek has needed for ages. The Borg storyline seems interesting and it'll be good to see what they do with them as it's obviously not going to end well as that would be rather dull.

Romulan's are always good bad guys as they don't normally fight head on and prefer to skulk in the shadows but can if forced and all in all I'm extremely happy with the show so far.

It's pretty much everything I'd hoped from a decent Star Trek show  .

It felt like another filler episode to be honest. I don't have any gripe with them continuing the TNG timeline, the story seems generally decent but the pace is just slow beyond belief.

Patrick Stewart also seems to have really aged quite a lot since I last saw him on screen in Green Room. Looking at it, that was 5 years ago now, doesn't seem so long but at his age it probably seems longer. Now I will say, he could be acting Picard as aged and past it, but if the intent is to show Picard getting back to where he was, then it's going to be an incredible transformation.
