Star Trek: Picard. Paramount+ and Prime Video. Series Finale out now.

The dialogue in this latest episode is Not Good.

Directed by Jonathan Frakes though so that's neat.

I enjoyed it!

The weakest of the series so far, but it is nice to see that Picard's snap resignation and hermithood had real consequences for other people, and they're calling him out on it. Him leaving the refugees and never going back to visit, despite his promise, kind of made me think of Space Seed/Wrath of Khan in a way.

I also watched First Contact today, and I'm beginning to think that, given his breakdown in that movie, and the rash and arguably selfish decisions he made after the attack on Mars, shows a degradation in Picard's self-control. Could that possibly be linked to his Irumodic syndrome?

Patrick Stewart also seems to have really aged quite a lot since I last saw him on screen in Green Room. Looking at it, that was 5 years ago now, doesn't seem so long but at his age it probably seems longer. Now I will say, he could be acting Picard as aged and past it, but if the intent is to show Picard getting back to where he was, then it's going to be an incredible transformation.

I'm finding it hard to stick with at the moment, and it's my love for Patrick Stewart and the character that's keeping me with it.

Not sure about the hologram though he should just act normal when on the helm. It did annoy me when they refused to take orders from Picard and didn't want to beam the survivor onboard how ridiculous!

I liked the episode and the series overall is excellent so far.
There don't seem to be any terrible characters and so far they all have decent roles to play. I actually also don't mind that the old crew hasn't shown up yet which is a surprise as I really thought they'd bring them back early even if just for fan service.

Just caught up with the latest episode and I thought it was another very good showing. I love that they're giving things room to breathe and taking time to show the impact of what has happened in the time since we last visited Picard and the TNG universe in general.

I enjoyed the recent episode again.

I kind of wish they'd give a proper indication of what's going on. There seems to be a lot of threads but they don't seem particularly attached. Still kind of enjoying but it doesn't feel like a Star Trek show.

It's starting to feel a little more like Trek actually, as each episode goes by. Hopefully now that character X has turned up it'll get more Trek-ish still.

They've basically undone Gene Roddenberry's vision for what Star Trek is meant to be and represent. Having a character basically fired from their job and living in a trailer just further undermines the basic premise of Star Trek.

His vision for Trek was undone well before this. And that's a good thing.

Gene's vision wasn't that good anyway. A show where nobody has flaws and nobody has disagreements makes for incredibly dull TV.

People had disagreements but generally followed orders. The point of star trek for me was always that in the future we'd learn to live aside our differences and work together. This show seems to be saying "Nah, in the future we'll still be a bunch of dicks" which is incredibly depressing.

I think DS9 flirted with the problems of the federation but Picard has whole sale replaced the federation with something else.

Edit: it's more 24 in space than a continuation of TNG.

If Picard had to bust Jack out of a Russian Cryo-Prison to take on some Romulan operatives I think this might become the greatest show ever made.

I don't think the vision for Trek was ever that nobody can be fired and decide to live in a trailer in the desert.
This show is way more of a Trek show than Discovery and the slower pace is most welcome. Yes, it's different but I'm pretty sure we all knew it would be because Patrick Stewart said it would be for ages before the show started.

Would I have loved an exact continuation of TNG, Hell yes but I don't think that show would work now with new viewers and I don't think this show can survive just on the views of TNG fans alone.

They did but they didn't fundamentally change the nature of the federation. Sisko didn't actively move against the federation and a lot of the tension of the series was based on whether the federation could survive without falling back onto old rules. Admittedly I think some of the last TNG films did cross that line.

People got kicked out of Star Fleet all the time - just look at the Maquis. Then there's Section 31 as a malevolent force. Even Kirk was always a rebel...

Perhaps we should take off the nostalgia specs?

There's a reason Roddenberry was "promoted" early in TNG's run. It was to get him out of the way, and let the writers work without being stymied by his "utopian vision".

If Roddenberry had his way, the Enterprise crew would not have held prejudices against Klingons in "The Undiscovered Country", and the film would have lost all of its message and meaning. Gene created a great framework, but Star Trek was truly defined by its writers.
