I was wondering about PC gaming controls. I recently got a new macbook, and I was into the idea of being able to play some games on it, but at first the controls were putting me off, cos movement is on my right hand,so I didn't get it. I just tried mapping the controls the other way round, so movement of the character is on the right, and its a lot better. So I was wondering

- Is there an optimal way to play? Like a recommended way of mapping controls
- The internet tells me theres a way to use a PS4 controller on games, if your on windows. So I was wondering if I could possibly do the same for mac.

wasd to move, mouse to look. Left/right same as console.

Shift, control, tab, alt, e, z, x, v, q, space etc do most things in most games, m for map, numbers for weapons etc

You use your little finger for the shift, ctrl etc and your thumb for space. Depends if you TouchType or need to learn to PC.

Type by feel/muscle memory without looking at keys

You forget R (reload) & U, T, Y (common chat binds).

Yup. Once you've played a few games you can either map to whatever you want or pretty much guess the controls for most stuff like fps, obviously strategy games are different. Lots of platformers use z and x do stuff and also since console ports you get on screen prompts and tutorials for some things so you don't even need to figure out the controls.

When I first began properly gaming on PC I used the directional arrows for movement, so binded everything to the right, however this proved to become a real hassle, because with every new game I had to rebind, find buttons setups that were comfortable. So I just got fed up and used WASD. I usually only have to adjust a button or two in games these days and I'm good to go. Plus it's just superior anyway.

I'm used to moving with my left, and moving my perspective with the right, so using the arrows didn't feel right at all.

Good, because tbh doing that is retarded. Wasd is far more ergonomic.

Of course WASD is better, but I'm not sure how using the arrow keys changes what hand you use.

Just checking, you are using a mouse right?

I used to map WASD to the arrow keys when I was quite young. I don't know what made me change but, looking at it now, I don't know how I ever played with that set up. Maybe I never jumped or ducked.

No Laptop. So the arrow keys are on the right.

And the mouse is further right, surely? You'd still use your left hand even though the arrow keys are on the right of the keyboard.

If you are using a track pad on the laptop, then that's something you should stop doing also.

I tried to play quake 3 arena with a track pad once. It didn't work out.
