I'm not sure you'll be able to get 16GB of RAM and a 1070 in for £900. Those alone come to ~400-450?

We can help out, maybe one of the GR members near you could help in person?

I remember helping Karl with his years ago, answering PMs etc.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

The hardest part of a self build is the cable management. Oh god I hate cable management.

Sort of depends on the case. I used a nice Fractal one this time around and didn't have to use a single cable tie as it had a nice PSU shroud to hide most of power cable mess and velcro straps you could just strap the other cables into.

I think I'm going to attempt to make my own custom cables at some point next year.

I look forward to incorrectly wiring my 24-pin and blowing up my PC.

Why would you even want to make your own power cables? Just to get ones a bit shorter to make cable management easier?

I've made Ethernet cables before at my last workplace when doing racking and patching but that's it.

Well I've done the cable management for my case. Lots of excess but not really a problem. I'd do it for aesthetics really but right down at the bottom on the list of things to do though. I'm going to put my build up on PC Part Picker in a few days, I'll link it here.

Wouldn't know where to begin with building myself and I don't really have time for that just now between work, college and decorating taking up most of my time. Would prefer a rebuild from selected parts.

There are no words to describe that feeling of checking that System Requirements site and finding out you can run a game after having such a diabolical scrapheap of a computer for years.

Bought myself some goodies from the Steam sale, not massive discounts, but things I really want to play. Mostly Xbox exclusives, as I don't have an Xbox this generation. Most excited for Super Lucky's Tale, it looks gorgeous. Very tempted by Quantum Break at 75% off. I may pick that up prior to the sale ending on the 3rd of January (Should I be buying this stuff on Microsoft's store for the Xbox unlock, do they still do that? Not that I plan to get an Xbox One, but certainly they seem to be in a great position for the next generation).

I'm still completely lost on this whole trading card thing (I have 3 the same :x), and have no idea what trading them for gems gets me. What on earth is a booster pack? It seems to list the choice of games I own. Is it just cards for games I own? They have no purpose other than collecting?

Sell trading cards on the market place for Steam Credit that you can use to buy games.

So heres one I worked out on overclockers... its not the best of the best but I think its a solid right down the middle kind of thing. You should be able to play basically anything at 1080p med/high no bother.

A better CPU would knock performance up a reasonable amount followed by better GPU

I did opt for a decently sized SSD for boot disk and a well sized SSHD for the secondary, this will allow you to have shitloads of games stored and running at a reasonable speed above a standard HDD

Not sure if anyone else can do better but Ive looked all over the place and this is the best basis I can find

I was able to put together something similar on PC Specialist, though it's a full size case rather than Micro-ATX, but comes in at about £871 so perhaps gives £40 of money to play with.

Main difference is a Quad Core CPU rather than a Dual Core one, though running at a lower clock speed per core.

  • Case - PCS GENESIS G1B CASE + SD CARD READER
  • Processor (CPU) - Intel® Core™ i3 Quad Core Processor i3-8100 (3.60GHz) 6MB Cache
  • Motherboard - ASUS® H310M-A: Micro-ATX, DDR4, LGA1151, USB 3.1, SATA 6GBs
  • Memory (RAM) - 16GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 2400MHz (2 x 8GB)
  • Graphics Card - 6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1060 - DVI, HDMI, 3 x DP - GeForce GTX VR Ready!
  • 1st Storage Drive - 2TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 64MB CACHE
  • 1st M.2 SSD Drive - 250GB WD Black™ M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3000MB/s R | 1600MB/s W)
  • DVD/BLU-RAY Drive - NOT REQUIRED
  • Power Supply - CORSAIR 450W VS SERIES™ VS-450 POWER SUPPLY
  • Power Cable - 1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
  • Processor Cooling - INTEL STANDARD CPU COOLER
  • Thermal Paste - STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
  • Sound CardONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
  • Wireless/Wired Networking - WIRELESS 802.11N 300Mbps/2.4GHz PCI-E CARD
  • USB/Thunderbolt Options - MIN. 2 x USB 3.0 & 2 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL + MIN. 2 FRONT PORTS
  • Operating System - Genuine Windows 10 Home 64 Bit - inc. Single Licence [KK3-00002]

This was from customising their "Vortex Elite" pre-build.

It's a tough ask from a pre-built site. Does it have to be a small case? This could be an option here. I'm just worried about the PSU and motherboard quality. Doesn't the H110 chipset only support single channel memory?

I could maybe bump Laga's config up to an 8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1070. Would anything else on that build apart from a. bigger case need changing e.g. the cooling fan and thermal paste?

Also, what's the difference between the normal storage drive options and the "M.2 SSD Drive" one when you can chose SSD drives for the storage drive options anyway?
