Also, what's the difference between the normal storage drive options and the "M.2 SSD Drive" one when you can chose SSD drives for the storage drive options anyway?

My understanding is that M.2 is a much faster interface than the traditional SATA. So while SATA SSDs are still super fast in comparison, M2 SSD's are even faster still.

Some M.2 SSDs are still SATA, it's the NVMe M.2 SSDs that you'll want for the big performance gains.

In the real world you're not really going to notice the difference a M.2 gives you unless you're constantly finding yourself spending over 30 seconds trying to load a big file into an editor of some sort. It's not worth a large price difference for gaming. Even loading Windows is a minimal gain, and you only really do that once a session. Similar with faster RAM, not worth it for the vast, vast majority of people if there's a substantial price difference. Once you hit a minimum spec you really hit the rule of diminishing returns very quickly.
But if there's minimal price difference then yeah, go for it.
I would argue that the difference between a 6GB 1060 and a 1070 isn't really worth it at 1080p, unless the price difference was less than £50. If you're looking to do VR or a higher resolution, or rendering then that's a different matter.

Yeah tbh I'm considering ditching that monitor I posted previously and just getting a 144hz 1440p one.

Amazon currently have an offer of a Dell 23.8-inch LED Widescreen Anti-Glare Monitor - Black (1ms Response Time, QHD 2560x1440, DP, HDMI, USB, G-Sync) monitor for £380, down from £500, if that works, is Gsync for gaming and is 1440p and the listing has the refresh rate as 165Hz.

The downside is that it's a TN Panel rather than IPS.

That's a really nice gaming monitor for the price. I'm pretty tempted, I'm planning on doing a build later this coming year (when I should have a bit more free time & disposable income, fingers crossed!) and it'd be a good fit.

I should probably be sensible and ignore it for now, but I'll definitely look into that monitor again closer to the time and cross my fingers for a decent price.

Another build based on Laga's one https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/view/Vortex-Elite/ Bumped the processor up to an i5 and the graphics card to a 1070 Ti?

Image

Price of that is £1196 but I might change the INTEL STANDARD CPU COOLER to something better and I've been told I'd be better getting rid of the Windows 10 installation option which shaves £100 off the price and just buying a key off eBay for a few quid.

Get rid of BullGuard Internet Security as well, even if it's free it's easier if it just isn't on there at all. With Windows 10 you only really need Windows Defender, alongside occasional runs of Malware Bytes and running some ad/script blocker add-ons with your Browser. Though removing the OS will probably remove that anyway.

Also, do you need 2 SSDs rather than just one SSD for the OS and then either a standard HDD or a Hybrid HDD for storage? That will be bumping the price up.

By taking your build but with the storage options I posted on the last page (Giving you a 250GB NVMe SSD with way higher speeds than the ones you've posted because it's on PCIe, plus a 2TB 7,200rpm HDD for storage), and dropping the OS, you can swap the 1070 for a 2070 and still come in at £1,165.

Oh I just chose those hard drives because one of the others I chose was out of stock and it wouldn't let me save that build otherwise so I just chucked anything in there for now.

Is it a big jump from the 1070 to the 2070?

I just want to recommend Slay the Spire, really great little game, it comes out of Early Access this month and price will rise. So picking it up in the Steam Sale is totally worth it.

Honestly, I feel I need a degree to figure out the ins and outs of connecting an Xbox One Controller to my Laptop. Cabled via the Play And Charge kit, no problem, played through the first few levels of Super Lucky's Tale with no issues, but I have zero idea whether it's actually charging (the light doesn't light up), and I can't for the life of me find a controller battery indicator. I even installed that Xbox Accessories app from the store. Neither that app nor Steam seems to give me an indication, which a Google search suggested they should. It took me far longer than it should to figure out how to pair via Bluetooth, and even longer to figure out how to turn the controller off  .

But Super Lucky's Tale is super pretty. Possibly the nicest looking platformer I've played. My laptop seems to run it at max settings by default, very reassuring I don't need to fiddle, because I haven't the foggiest idea what I'm doing.

It's not a bad price at £859 and a very good price at £679.

There's something weird about the RAM they're advertising though. In the ebay specs section it's down as 16GB but in the description from the seller it's down as 8GB.

Yeah sadly I was too hesitant, the voucher expired and the BIN price went up by £130 as well...ah well.

This.

Bought it at the start of the Steam sale and have played it for nearly 50 hours already, I normally don't like deck building card games either but the rogue like element keeps it interesting.

Also bought Book of Demons in the sale which also fuses card based gameplay to an entirely different genre, in this case ARPG, plays a bit like Diablo but all weapons, armour and skills are cards which you randomly acquire - not the greatest game I've ever played but I seem to be enjoying it nontheless.

Played and completed The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit yesterday, and very much enjoyed it. Was then delighted to find Life is Strange 2 Ep1 is a mere £3.20 in the Steam winter sale. An amazing price for a game that made many critics' GOTY lists:

Managed to get my exhaust fans connected to my GPU so that they actually respond to the GPU temperature rather than me having to set them to a constant RPM. Tested that they respond to the control software and they work! Need to stress test the GPU now, see how the thermals hold up but for now my PC is completely silent while browsing. The two 120mm Noctuas were pretty quiet at a constant 1500 RPM before though.

Had to take my heatsink off again to do it. :dread: At least I got to see that my first thermal paste application was probably reasonable.

Misinterpreted the drawings I'd made of the PCB and Fan/RGB shroud so I initially thought I could just attach the PWM adaptor to a header that was not covered by the heatsink. Turns out it was a RGB header, along with most of the headers actually. The three stock fans were run through a single header. Made me worry less about the power draw from the Noctuas on the GPU.

Build is here if anyone is interested - Link

How do you have exhaust fans for a GPU? It this one of the models with a liquid cooler or an unusual case configuration?
