A new report from an analyst firm suggests that the PC gaming market is set to cool down in the foreseeable future, and that some 20 million gamers are set to abandon the PC in favor of playing the latest and greatest titles in front of the TV on a console (or indeed potentially via the cloud).

This comes from Jon Peddie Research (JPR), an outfit that often chimes in on the PC gaming front, particularly when it comes to facets such as graphics card market share, for example (in which Nvidia has pushed further forward with its domination of late).

JPR’s new report contends that as we go forward through to 2022, some 20 million PC gamers will “defect to TV gaming platforms”, an umbrella which covers the big consoles, plus the likes of Apple TV, and cloud gaming such as the incoming Google Stadia.

This shift will apparently be ‘loosely correlated’ with the global decline of the PC as a whole, with most of the defectors coming from the lower-end of the market (gaming PC builds which cost less than a thousand bucks).

Having previously bought everything that's not a console exclusive on a PC I've been buying more and more on console recently.

Reason is two fold. My PC keeps crashing and I can't work out why; all tests I do show the memory of my GPU as being healthy but all fingers point to the memory of my GPU as being the cause. I really can't be bothered to put the effort into working it out either.

Secondly, getting my PC to display on my TV just seems to be a battle these days. Back in the days of 1080p it was easy, just shove a steam link under whichever TV I wanted it on. Now that things are 4K it's a pain.

Apart from your graphics card, that's pretty much what my pc is and it spanks every program you throw at it.

If it's for gaming then I would save money on your CPU and spend more money on your GPU. Also reduce the PSU wattage to save a bit of money, you could take it down to 500w pretty comfortably.

For £50 more you could get the Ryzen 7 2700 and a RTX 2070. Which you could save by just using the AMD stock cooler which is plenty good enough and slightly reducing the cost of your PSU.

At the moment I'd imagine you're going to have acres of headroom on your CPU while your GPU bottlenecks in terms of gaming performance.

What's the plan for storage?

My editing work is my secondary source of income so it's pretty important. What makes the AMD CPU so much better for editing?

It depends on the editing software you're using. If it's heavily optimised for multicore multithread CPU's then the 8 core 16 thread setup on the AMD will probably do a better job than the 4 core 8 thread setup of the Intel. Even with 0.8Ghz base clock speed difference betweent the two of them. If it's mainly based on single core performance then the Intel will be better, but not by a giant percentage. The delta between the prices of the CPUs is greater than the delta between single core performance on the CPUs.

rtx 2060 isnt a bottleneck as it were, but I do support the idea of using the ryzen 2700x and 2070 over using an i7 and 2060

the thing to note with using ryzen is you should opt for the faster memory though, as I did on my second part list as it performs better with it

amd is good for editing tasks and gooseberry fool like that as the core architecture is good for the multithreaded tasks they usually use - you lose a little at the top end with gaming but you are talking a few fps up to 10fps max in most cases, really no big deal, especially when you consider the cost savings

How far off zen 2 are we now? I have money saved for a new computer, but I'm waiting on those chips.

Been looking at upgrading my GPU to an RTX 2060 then later in the year upgrading the CPU. Shouldn't be a problem with me only having a 1080p screen in regards to bottlenecking right? Right now I have an i5 6600, GTX 1060 (6GB OC) and 16GB Ram. Guessing its just a case of uninstalling the Drivers, removing the old GPU and plugging in the new one before downloading the Drivers again? The only thing I've ever changed in my computer is the HDD.

I recommended a build with a Ryzen CPU to a friend who owns an editing company and he's extremely happy with it. It's the sort of thing where the cpu difference in some situations may be outperformed by other chips, but for editing or workstation uses it will tide you over extremely well, same with the Xeon I just ended up with and that's a 4 core chip.

Storage also matters, you do a huge amount of io with editing so get an SSD for current projects and a 7200rpm hard disk for scratch disk / archive. With a cpu like that you can just encode everything as h.264 on the fly so not a huge storage requirement for a small amount of work but you will drastically see performance gains in loading and writing media.

Epic Games Store sale. Good discounts apparently, on some unreleased games too.
