What an obnoxiously written story that seems to decide to blame the person who found this out rather than Epic for their debatable software practices.

The spying for the chinese is a bit far fetched (not racist owing to it being impossible to be racist against a governmental dictatorship) but the accusation that they're hoovering up personal data and looking where they haven't been instructed to seems sound.

Then amateur analysis was taken as fact and stripped of context and passed around the cybernet, prompting Epic to respond and try to clear it up.

Also worth bearing in mind their excuse they were only doing it for friends lists is a bit gooseberry fool, as there is an API in steam for that which just about every other launcher uses without issue.

There's no doubt that the quality of your average RPS article had tumbled recently (perhaps the good stuff is behind their ridiculous Support Programme?) but I don't get the furore around that article. It states what happened and offers an opinion: Internet detectives Got Stuff Wrong, a game company corrected them, it reveals what's actually happening and expresses some mild discomfort at what the Epic store is doing.

You don't get the furore around a company copying your data for no logical reason? Like Zartan said, if they want to copy over friends lists it's easy enough.

It's dodgy as strawberry float, especially considering the information contained in that file they're copying in terms of games and time played, as well as possibly being a big breach of GDPR. GDPR of course is the reason Steam profiles defaulted to private last year and would be why someone would need to go to such nefarious means to try and gather this data.

Epic would benefit greatly from having this data of what games a large chunk of the PC gaming audience invest their time in. It no doubt helps that they've got the guy behind SteamSpy as their Director of Publishing for the store and if they're using the data beyond friends lists it'd explain who he had the info earlier this year to state that "only half of all Fortnite players have Valveā€™s platform installed."

All they had to do was make this an opt-in and the majority of the user base probably would have accepted anyway, most likely without even thinking about it.

Sorry I thought the discussion was about the tone of the article rather than news itself.

Which yeah, is gooseberry fool.

There's nothing to suggest the internet detectives got things right but nothing to suggest they go things wrong either. Epic released a statement saying they got it wrong and they've painted themselves as the bastion of trust so far so we should believe them without question.

Well, besides the legal recriminations Epic would open themselves up to if they out and out lied to consumers on a public platform, the article states quite clearly that this sort of backlash has happened with every other online storefront and that it was Epic's mishandling rather than any new information that led to this going viral.

Also as the article points out...the claims are a bit racist?

Firstly sorry for posting this here but I didn't think this question needed a dedicated topic and I have a feeling you guy's will know the answer.

I have all my stuff (Consoles and TV's about the house) linked via old cat 5 ethernet cables attached to home plugs, would I see any improvement from changing to cat 6 cables? I have basic BT internet and get 60mb at the moment when I run a speed test on my consoles.
I know they're cheap as hell but if I'm not going to notice any difference then I'll just keep the current set-up.

Thanks in advance and feel free to call me an idiot if this is really obvious :D .

The homeplugs might well be a tighter bottleneck than your ethernet cables, so investigate whether they could be upgraded or optimised first. If they are rated at 200 Mbps - or if your wiring is dodgy - you won't benefit from 1 Gbps ethernet at either end.

Ignoring the homeplugs: If they're genuinely CAT5 (100Mbps) then it might be worth upgrading. If they're CAT5e (1Gbps) then you probably won't see much difference.

Take the console the room with the router, in order to take the home plugs out of the equation. If speeds improve, cat 6vs 5/5e isn't the issue.

The cables are all bloody ancient and most of them come from the BT homehub boxes so I have no idea what they're rated at :fp: .
I don't think I'm exaggerating here in that some may be over 10 years old.

The plugs are TP-LINK TL-PA251KIT AV200+ Multi-Streaming Powerline Starter Kit with AC Pass Through (I have 4 dotted about) and at the moment I have no real complaints I just wondered if I'm missing out on have super awesome internet but at the moment I can download most things (the division 2 install download that people were moaning about only took me 90 minutes) fine.

I'm not the most demanding internet user as it's only myself and my dad and he just uses it to watch the rugby via the BT sports app and I can use Netflix at the same time with no issues.

I solved my homeplug bottleneck by only plugging a lamp into the passthrough rather than a 6-gang extension lead.

It should say on the side of the cables what they are. I'm also using ancient freebie RJ45 cables and I'm pretty sure they're all Cat5e.

Pathway is out soon and looks rather marvellous: Indiana Jones Tactics basically

It's being published by Chucklefish, the guys who brought us Stardew and developed War Groove. So I'm hyped.

I've had that on my Steam wishlist for a while, looks interesting.
