I learned nothing, other than that melee probably isn't my best choice.

I've never been this bad at a game before. It kinda stings.

Not that I know much about DOTA minus DOTA on Warcraft 3, but never play against AI. It's completely pointless.

Well, I'm pretty sure playing online right now would be less enjoyable.

This is true, its actually useful to practice against bots in Dota 2 to learn how the game feels and controls, how your hero feels. Its not full practice, and you're only learning one part of the game, actually playing it and playing a hero as opposed to learning how to play against other human opponents, but I really don't recommend going into any public games right now as you will be slaughtered and you can't do anything about it. I think I lost a lot of my first bot games, just gotta grind those matches down, practice, stick to a hero type and learn it well and try it out online. I suppose half the battle is not being annoyed if you lose any online games and the like when you eventually do try. Generally speaking, heading into an actual proper match first time on a hero is a really bad idea for most players of any skill level.

Try reading this:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-07-10-the-dota-2-experience-part-one

It's making me want to try MOBAs again, especially Dota 2 as valve have done the decent thing and made all the heroes free. This extract in particular made me finally understand it:

Dota 2 is fencing.

That's the skill, and the appeal. I finally see it. You're fighting back and forth down these lanes, looking for an opening in the other heroes' defense. The other guy's too close to your tower, or too far from his friend, his ultimate skill's on cooldown, his health is low. Fights in other games last seconds. Fights in Dota 2 are dramatic; entire minutes of feints and narrow escapes. Duels that can span forests, roads and rivers without coming to an end.

Having done fencing myself, the metaphor fits, and makes sense to me. I may have to resurrect the MOBA thread, especially if there is a chance of some of us getting into a team. However GW2 is coming, decisions decisions....

I remember one of your problems being the massive time sink and dedication needed to play a Moba and I'd actually say Dota is the worst offender for it. I have no real problem but matches do regularly take up to nearly an hour, can be a big problem with people. The rest is just practice and patience really. It is a very highly skilled game but really satisfying and plenty of variety.

I just jumped straight into matches with other players as I've been watching Dota 2 videos for ages so I already kinda knew what to do. Just a case of practising and getting to know all the heroes from here on in tbh. If anyone fancies a game with me just add me on steam -> mrpineapples

I would have thought Dota 2 would have been right up your street - really complicated and difficult, not a hint of "casual" or "pay to win" and no tutorials at all, plus the chance to tell idiots to do one on a regular basis.

While that does all sound appealing, Id have to come to terms with the fact that I would be playing a moba, and that just isnt cricket.

I don't even think any of us used any genre-specific terms or nomenclature.

Aside from maybe "lanes" and "your tower", but they're pretty self-explanatory.

The tutorials will (thankfully) be there when the game actually comes out, though. They're on the menu, they're just greyed out.

I'd imagine they're going to be similar to League's tutorials (i.e. here's the rules, here's the controls, here's a stupidly easy practice match, now go out there and get your face caved in). I'm not holding out hope that they'll be much use.

Well, in addition to the main Tutorial option and the Mentoring option, there's like a "Quests" option or something, which I imagine is a bunch of situation-specific tutorials to cover some more in-depth stuff. I hope that's what it is, anyway.
