Seen that there is now a rumoured 3050Ti. It seems they are basically introducing new GPUs from all the binned material for the higher end 3080/3070s.

Bit of a shambles. They aren’t really helping supply. They are basically just recycling off cuts.

Hopefully not too much of a delay. We ordered my wife a Ryzen 4800u for the mrs last summer, cracking laptop but kept getting delayed by Lenovo in China. Great laptop though for all things non gaming.

I'm rather out the loop, but I just assumed all modern data centres were split/replicated over separate physical locations these days.

This is probably going to be a bit of an eye-opener for a lot of people.

Yeah that's crazy if losing a single location is the end of their data recovery situation, very short-sighted if true!

That's incredible that they don't have some form of online replication or even basic offsite tape backups. That's just crazy for a DC to operate like that! Even the smallest companies I have worked at have had some form of offsite backup.

I wonder if it was actually the Rust Developers didn't want to pay for it rather than the DC didn't have it.

We had (and paid for) the OVH backup option when we were hosted there. I can't remember if it was off site though.

We're still hosted by OVH with automated daily backups I believe. I think we went Texas :fp: > London > OVH France > Hetzner Germany > OVH France

Actually we currently have two OVH servers (both in Roubaix)...

Honestly not sure if our back-ups are offsite or simply in the same facility in case our rack fails. Our server is in a different country sure but that news was a bit surprising to be honest and made me think twice about some off-site database backups at least! Regardless of whatever the host does, if it's going to go and burst into flames that even firefighters can't put out... :fp:

Cloud / distributed hosting architectures are obviously very resilient but they are also generally priced "on demand" so if demand goes up, cost goes up astronomically scaled like that. A more traditional data centre is generally cheaper yeah and (in theory) easier to administer, with a fix cost attached to it. So if you more or less know what your traffic demands are, it's often a sensible approach and much simpler.

One neat thing we do have which kicked in for a couple of hours the other day actually is DDoS mitigation, our traffic gets booted to another system that's built to screen every single packet automatically for a time while we're getting pounded with worthless traffic, and then it gets rerouted back to our server again without us having to do anything. Apparently nobody noticed.

Then again there were "isuses" at OVH as you probably all remember and I never got an explanation for what happened. Some router failure or whatever. They credited us about £1 and everyone got on with their lives.

"For an extra $5 a month, we provide a full recovery service for all your data!"

"...which sits on a Dell tower PC situated 4 feet away in the same room. Data recovery cannot be guaranteed.."

I've actually thread banned Laga until the 29th.

The right decision I'm sure you will all agree.

https://www.pcgamer.com/nvidia-gpu-shor ... -bad-news/

Nvidia's GeForce GPU shortage isn't improving anytime soon

Do you want the good news or the bad news first? I'm going to make the call for you, my rhetorical friend: The bad news is that Nvidia's GPU supply will continue to be royally screwed (a suddenly more now phrase...) throughout the rest of the year. Digitimes (via Sweclockers) is reporting that, despite Nvidia's own hints to the contrary, the graphics card shortage isn't going to be eased by Q3 this year.

At the end of last year claims were that supply would increase by Q1 2021. Then in Q1 2021 it was Q2 2021. Now we're approaching that, it's Q3. These cards aren't gonna be around until 2022 at the earliest it seems.

Supposedly the hash limiter on 3060s to make them less appealing for mining has already been circumvented as well.

Always felt like that was going to happen. Coin mining just needs to strawberry float off basically.
