Still thinking about upgrades and new build options. Where are we in terms of release cycle for CPUs and GPUs? How long have we got until the next generation of stuff is out?

Trying to work out if it is best to hold on a bit longer and see what the next round of development brings.

No idea for CPUs but the GPU cycle has just started with the release of the NVidia 2XXX series. There's some good deals to be had on the lower end of the new range, the 2060s and the like.

Hasn't the RTX 2xxx line been out since last year? I've noticed they've recently had the "super" refresh out for those but wasn't sure if they had more life in them or whether the next big thing was due in the next 3-6 months.

Anyone else having problems with the last Steam update?

Steam won't display the Store, Library or any other tabs unless it's in Big Picture mode.

Thought I'd fixed it by deleting the HTML cache but after restarting my PC the problem came back and doing it again doesn't make any difference.

I've not had issues yet, but looking at the ResetEra threads on it others are experiencing similar issues to you so it does look like some kind of client side bug.

Also not had any issues with Steam yet but I do hate the redesigned library.

AMD released Zen2 CPUs a few months ago which are pretty damn good but still experiencing BIOS issues, will be mid-late next year before Zen3. Intel will likely have their next desktop CPUs out by mid next year though they have been struggling with the 10nm process for what seems like an eternity.

AMD recently released the RX5700/XT which offer great price/performance but lack raytracing, next Navi cards are assumed to have proper raytracing support. Nvidia should have the RTX3000 series cards out my mid-late next year which would probably be the best time to go for a raytracing GPU unless you see a half-price 2080Ti or Super as it's currently a big hit to performance. I believe the best bang-for-buck is between the 5700/XT and GTX1660/RTX2060 variants.

I was a bit skeptical at first but once you find the filters its alright. Set mine to installed only, and it is very clean.

This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

Thanks for the info!

I'm tempted to wait for the RTX3000 series, depends how far into the year they show up but I'll keep my eye on the current bang for buck leaders as well.

Managed to spill a reasonable amount of water onto my K70 gaming keyboard this arvo. Ripped out the USB lead, flipped it on its back and placed it on a tray of rice, but before I got it out the space key was firing off randomly so I'm a wee bit nervous.

Fun times.

:dread:

Hope it survives. This is one of the reasons I'm happy to just stick with cheap entry level peripherals.

Yeah, I don't think I'd ever considered the fragility of it before. If it breaks, it breaks but from a little research I've done they're fairly robust when it covers to liquids ('resistant' rather than 'proof')

There are a lot of cheapish mechs these days though, so it's not like when I had to shell out of fortune for my current TKL model (kind of a niche market compared to full size boards).

Left it upside down in rice for 3 days, plugged it back in this morning and (so far) there's been no adverse effects. It's also a lot cleaner now given I had to put all the keys back on so used the excuse to give them a wee polish

Phew, glad the KB is okay Taf. Hooray for rice!

I've been seeing some tempting deals on 2060 cards recently which have been tempting me, the main thing holding me back is it feels like the 6GB memory on them might not be that future proof.

How about the 2060 Super? Doesn't it have more than 6GB? For 1080p/1440p it's been absolutely fine for me though I was pissed off after buying one only for them to announce the Supers about 2 months later :x

So err blimey, had no idea monitor overclocking was a thing:

https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/1674 ... fresh-rate

Turns out my bog standard 1080p 60hz can go up to 74hz, with seemingly no penalty!...gosh I wish I knew this three years ago D:

Is lovely though, it's surprising how noticeable a bump even 60 to 74hz is. Definitely worth a gander, you may be surprised at what your monitor can do!

Steam still isn't working properly for me, seemed fine yesterday as everything displayed properly but just loaded it up now and yet again everything is just blank.

FFS Valve how difficult can it be to update your own software without strawberry floating something up.

After the last update Steam more often than not for me crashes and hangs instantly when I try to launch it. I have to kill it and re-launch it two or three times sometimes to get it working.

I was using the beta version of the new UI and haven't had a single problem so far.

One of the downside of near infinite combinations of hardware and software configurations I guess.

I'm currently having a whole load of trouble logging into Steam right now, so it seems something's amiss.
