Awesome. I am holding out hope of a scan FE drop. The 3080Ti have been available for hours after the drops regularly. At £1050, they are poor value compared to the 3080 for £650, but they are available. If I had £2000 I’d be getting one of those FE drops, possibly a £3090 and building my own. Scan have got some good prices on 12th gen intel, beating ryzen for now and I’d be building an i7 12700.

It seems okay right now but when I turned my PC on this morning, there were pixelated artifacts on one side of my screen. I've just run a memory test which found no errors and now the screen looks normal. What other tests should I be running to investigate this? I'm hoping to God that this isn't my GPU giving up the ghost.

I don't want to have to return my whole PC for repairs

Not sure. I’ll see what the other guys say. Maybe just a slow morning for the PC? But yeah, while in warranty you don’t want to ship it back over Christmas.

Well it has been okay for the last hour and a bit so fingers crossed it's okay. Just installing the new graphics drivers and keeping my fingers crossed that it's fine over the weekend. I want to believe it was just a temporary blip but my gut tells me something ain't quite right otherwise it wouldn't have happened.

Still, only happened the once so here's to being optimistic.

Don't be giving nvidia ideas to tie their RRP to model numbers!

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

If it's anything like my GPU, it'll be the driver. I know a new driver has been released as Twitch will periodically lock up my entire system or when I come out of sleep mode I'm greeted with artifacting.

Fingers crossed. Installed the new driver before I left for work so here's hoping that was all it was. I can't be having HL Alyx interrupted!

I reckon marketing have already suggested it a few times…

Yeah sometimes that stuffs caused by drivers as if it's on desktop etc that's pretty low level gooseberry fool.

I had glitching issues in my new QHD Dell display until I updated the drivers for an ancient QuadroFX card, when I was expecting it to be a cable.

Beast!! I’ve just upgraded to a 5800x and it’s a great processor. Runs a bit warm mind.

Exciting times. You got a back log to play? What’s first?

I’m starting to enjoy deathloop but it’s a bit up and down on PC. It will not run with afterburner but that is making optimised settings difficult. BF2042 runs nicely with that CPU, so much better than my old 6 core.

I saw quite a few people having issues with Deathloop on PC but it was pretty much plain sailing for me - no issues and great performance. The engine is known for being a bit temperamental though - at launch Dishonored 2 on PC was a right mess.

I had issues with Forza horizon 5 too. But I am getting crashing at start up and I had a crash while running the other day (possibly VRAM related on a 3070) but it’s shows 7.1Gb out of 7Gb available but internet reckons ‘penalty’ isn’t massive as it’s inaccurate (which is why I want afterburner).

I was planning on picking up Far Cry 6 for PC and throwing that at it as a potential starter.

I'll also have Halo Infinite from Gamepass to give things a whirl.

I almost didn't get the 5800x and stuck with a 5600x, as a lot of what I'd read was that performance gains were minimal, but I went for it eventually as there was a relatively small price difference at the time and it seemed like slightly better future proofing.

Yeah if the prices are relatively close then there's little reason not to go with the 5800x, if nothing else then more cores may come in handy for other tasks even if it doesn't make a huge difference to the majority of games!

I keep meaning to play around with learning Blender so could come in handy with that :D

Made a good decision with how BF2042 is so CPU limited. I don’t think standard games will ever be so CPU limited but it can’t hurt. I think ray tracing/DLSS will continue to need CPU and those 2 extra cores will help in the future, or BF2042 now (I’ve played about 30 hours).

I ordered the 5800x with the 10% eBay code the other day. I hadn't really been looking to upgrade from my R5 2600X, but it popped up on HUKD shortly after I'd seen it was recommended the Hardware Unboxed breakdown of BF 2042 performance. :fp:

I've been trying to grab a 3070FE to upgrade from my 1060 6GB to make 2042 a bit more playable, but hopefully the 5800x will do enough.

It was only after ordering that I read up on how the 5800x needs some serious cooling — I'm currently running my 2600X on the stock cooler in a case from 2009... so down the hardware purchasing rabbit hole I go! :slol:

My 5800x will have a Coolermaster H410r cooler so hopefully that will do a good cooling job on it.

There are some things you can do with it. Stock it does run warm. Definitely get an after market cooler. The stock ones with the 2xxx and 3xxx I found noisy and get to 80c+.

I have a noctua NH-D15s but I like it quiet with low speed fans. Have a look at using PBO and curve optimiser. I found limiting power/tdc/edc to 120/85/130 respectively and using a -30offset got a good mix of all core performance and good cooling. Restricting lower than that hit performance. It boosts higher if you raise those settings but I like 70c max.

https://youtu.be/VIZOFcdGp8s

Enable PBO and don’t mess too much with the settings off the bat in the bios. Use ryzen master, you can see clock speeds and temps and play with the values before you settle on bios settings and do away with ryzen master.

https://youtu.be/4o5AZM0AJXA

Use HWinfo to look at effective clock (as well as ryzen master reported clock). Effective clock checks that you get the frequency over and over, I.e. on low voltage etc it doesn’t skip a cycle and therefore look good on 1 cycle but not have the right power to run like that over and over.
