I know the current X570 and B550 boards will support the new Zen 3 chips when they come out but it's hard to know if it is worth putting down the extra cash to get the X570 range board or stick with a decent looking B550. Anyone know if there is a compelling case for going for the X570 boards?

The X range seems to quickly get into ridiculous prices and I'm not paying over £200 for a bloody motherboard!

I grabbed the MSI x570 Tomahawk because I am not at all secure in my masculinity. lol

It generally hovers around the £200 mark and I bought it simply for future-proofing really, it's the AMD newest chipset out there having only released this year, plus there are benchmarks out there that show a good motherboard, especially the x570 series, can help overall performance. Also, pretty much every review has it as the best AMD motherboard for those not willing to drop a ridiculous amount of cash on one.

Also, overclocking. Mainly overclocking.

I probably overspent to be honest, but at least I know I've a decent bit of kit that'll last me for ages.

EDIT: Also worth noting, AMD recently confirmed the Zen 3 will support the older 450 motherboard chipsets too.

No idea how I missed that about being able to use Zen 3 on B450 mobos. Mines an MSI B450 Tomahawk Max so happy days for when I get the impulse to upgrade my CPU next year :toot:

Worth a quick mention: this is likely out of date now. For example, my x570 board was launched in January 2020, as were a lot of other good value options. They obviously aren't included in this Nov 2019 vid.

But yeah, GamersNexus are excellent

Looks like the 3060 will be as powerful as 2080.

3070 Super (name guess) and 2080 20GB power also indicated.

Yeah, the 3060 and 3080 20gb will probably drop next year some times. No interest in either, but hopefully the latter will ease up the pressure on the 3080 10gb supply

I find the naming very confusing, I'd assume anything with a 3 at the front to be better than anything with a 2 at the front (lowest end 3 better than the highest 2). I'd be pissed off buying a 3 when I could have got the equivalent 2 for much less.

That picture gives a good indication of how the power has jumped from one generation to another.

While a 3080 will be more powerful than a 2080, you can't go off name alone when comparing a - for example - 3060 and 2070 Super.

Even within a generation you know a 3080 is better than 3070, but without benchmarks you won't know by how much.

Strangely enough, the 2's are actually more expensive than the equivalent 3's. the 2080ti was/is £1200 while its 3 equivalent is £650.

There's also the fact that the 2000 series was in many ways a test run for a lot of new technologies. The new cards are an entirely new architecture, meaning things like ray tracing are simply done better/faster.

I had a friend offer me a 2080ti for £500 and I turned him down. The 2000 series cards are still ok, but they simply can't match the new cards in many ways that aren't just about straight up FPS comparisons.

Still happy with my 2070 Super as I'm only on a 1080p screen and so I can't see me pushing the power limit on it any times soon.

Really nice to see that the prices are starting to get more reasonable again though, GPUs have been ridiculously overpriced for a long time now.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what price the 3060 comes in at. Not that I'm looking to upgrade my GPU anyway, as the RX580 I have right now is definitely not the bottleneck in my system, but I could definitely be tempted to add one onto the rest of my of my build if the price is right.

Yeah, I was considering a 3070, but really I just can't bring myself to spend so much on a graphics card - even if technically it'll be a good bang-for-buck compared to previous gens. The 3060 will likely be what I go for, unless AMD do something to render it inferior.

Ordered a few more bits for my new PC build last night, now I'm up to the following sorted:

GPU
RAM
CPU Cooler
PSU
Case
Case Fans

Need to decide on storage options (probably go with the most reasonably priced 1TB M.2 SSD) and then I just need AMD to get their gooseberry fool together and give us the new Ryzen chips so I can get the CPU and motherboard sorted as well.

Really looking forward to putting it all together! :toot:

Yeah I've seen them promoting the 8th as the reveal date - I just hope that the chips themselves are available soon after and there aren't any supply issues!

Some of the rumours for the Ryzen 9 5900x are looking quite promising. I mean 12 core with a 5Ghz boost seems nice. As with anything at these launch events I will wait for some reviews first.

AMD usually give a date for launch and there usually is stock.....in the US and like 4 units for the UK.

Yeah I'm interested in the specs but the main things are the price (I think they upped the "like for like" prices when the last generation came out...) and what the reviews and benchmarks show. Basically if they can come out with a 3700x replacement with improved performance at a similar price then I will probably go for it.

Where do people stand on reusing a power supply from an old build?

I've done it in the past on previous builds - one PSU ended up lasting me the best part of 11 years across two different systems many moons ago! But at the same time I can appreciate that there is advice to ditch a PSU after a certain amount of time rather than trying to wring every last drip out of it!

I'm trying to weigh up whether to keep my existing power supply to save a few quid to put towards other parts or bite the bullet and get a new one basically. My current PSU is 6 years old so it's definitely not a spring chicken, but it's not really been hammered in that time either!

If it meets the required demand, just use it. I'll keep mine if 750w is still gold enough.
