When I was using my Steam Controller I found the trackpad really good for camera control if I set it to emulate a mouse rather than a stick. Of course that use case depends a lot on how the game handles mixed inputs (gamepad + mouse). Some just don't handle it at all, while others don't care. Some games will allow it, but constantly be changing on-screen button prompts.
I think I played Arkham Asylum like that, but because it didn't like mixed inputs (can't remember how exactly) I set the left trackpad to WASD which was... not exactly ideal, but I liked it better that way than having the right pad emulate a stick for camera control.
Then there's the... mouse-like joystick setting I think it's called? There's no problems with mixed inputs if you use that setting. It might take a bit of work to get it working correctly (and helps if you can increase the camera sensitivity in-game).
