(PCGT VI) It's not just about hardware

The fact that the 3070 is cheaper than a 6800 and that I happen to own a g-sync monitor is probably enough to keep me with Nvidia this time around but I will still wait for reviews before making a decision.

Either way I am glad AMD have come out swinging. Nvidia have had it easy for too long.

Well I got that wrong, 6800 only needs 650W. 6800XT needs 750W like the 3080 and 6900XT needs 850W.

I'll have to get a new PSU for 3080 level performance whatever brand I go for, so I guess this now boils down to the overall price, drivers, and whether any of these cards are ever actually available to buy.

Maybe the 3070 is the way to go after all.

Kind of looks like drivers could be the Achille's heel of BIG NAVI at the moment. We will have to wait until Digital Foundry and others get their hands on these to find out.

How is "AMD drivers are gooseberry fool!" still a thing?! That's been one of the key reasons to avoid their cards for what feels like forever now, how have they still not sorted their gooseberry fool out? :fp:

For those silly enough to be queueing for a 3070 today, release time is apparently 1pm GMT.

I'm trying to decide whether to try and get a 3070 today, or hold out and get a 3080 when stocks stabilise next year.

Apparently Scan UK briefly had some 3080 Founder Editions yesterday afternoon.

My thought process is that I can buy a 3070 now (lol, I can try) then if I really need to I can sell for a good portion of the price and upgrade. According to ResetEra 3080 supply is going to be non-existent even going into Q2 2021 so I'm not waiting that long.

Currently 260 people watching the ASUS 3070 on Scan. For comparison, the 3080 page was up to 1500 at some points on launch day.

EDIT: First listing I've seen is a German site selling the GIGABYTE AIB for 800 strawberry floating Euros. That's 300 above RRP, 100 over the 3080 RRP.

One of the French sites I was checking has gone down, there's close to 1000 people viewing the ASUS 3070 Scan page.

Not a chance of getting one.

Pity, I am holding off making a decision on what way to go.

Sold out when I was submitting payment at Scan

The Nvidia store just pointed to a Scan site for the general product page, with no option to buy.

CCL at least had prices but they were instantly in other baskets. Currys doesn't seem to have ever had the option.

Eventually it loaded in a buy button.

Had one in my basket on a French store, then it hung and by the time I refreshed it was sold out. Most sites seemed to have switched to pre-order now.

Two different cards, one FE one Gigabyte both failed during payment.

It's the same as the 3080 launch, down to the letter.

Scan is completely broken now.
