Found the source of the noise.

It was my Dyson heater, not be PC :fp:. There must be a dust buildup on the fan blades but its impossible to clean off without dismantling the whole thing.

If it's anything like the regular bladeless fan, a can of compressed air should help. Works for me.

Priceless. Dyson’s marketing is so good you blame Pc components for dodgy noises!

The fan is almost silent, when on the lowest speed setting but on the highest setting sounds like its about to take off. Its also pretty bad design for something so expensive to have no removable/washable dust filter or means of removing built up dust - you literally have to take it to bits (thus invalidating the warranty) to clean the fan blades.

I have managed to stop the noise, rather accidentally, by running my wheelchair into it

Anyone here ordered through AWD-IT before? Any good? They're listed as a retailer on PC part picker, but I've never really heard of them before.

I ordered from them in March when lockdown was about to happen. With a base PS4 and only a single telly, I decided to get back into PC gaming for old strategy games. They were far cheaper than most others, build quality is fine. The issue I had was it took a month to deliver (but it was late March to late April so they had some grace). Easiest way to message them in Facebook messenger.

I would order from them again. But there are a lot of delay stories on the internet.

There are some good posters on ‘hot Uk deals’ who regularly post the best Deals from various suppliers. Take a look.

I bought my son https://store.acer.com/en-gb/acer-ed0-curved-monitor-ed270up-black-um-he0ee-p11

We've hooked it up to his laptop, how do I find out if it can display 1440p at 120 or 144hz? When I go into the Nvidia control panel the only option appears to be 60hz at 1440p, you have to drop to 1080p in order to get 120hz. Is that because the montior can't do it or the laptop?

The laptop uses a gtx 1650ti card.

I'm really not PC savy in anyway.

I could be wrong but I'd say the laptop can't output 1440p at anything above 60Hz.

I’m not at my PC, but if you right click the desktop and click ‘display’ it should show you the monitor and the laptop display, maybe under properties. It’s here you should be able to select resolution and frequency.

It also depends what cable you are using? HDMI or display port?

I suspect you have the HDMI connected. I think hdmi 1.2 is capped at 1440p 60hz. I would switch to DP and that should open up maximum refresh.

Yes it's hdmi. His laptop doesn't appear to have display port.

He is likely to get or build a gaming pc over the next year. Just trying to work out if the monitor is worth keeping.

I'm confused about something else. I've switched the display to 1080p 120hz and put the FPS counter on in the corner, it states 120fps on the desktop but every time I launch a game it never goes higher than 60fps, why would that be?

Also I can't find anything in the spec or user manual about what HDMI port it has. The user manual claims it's capable of 2560x1440 144hz via HDMI so I assume it's higher than HDMI 1.2.

That sounds like the monitor is only 60Hz and the games have VSync enabled, so the framerate is being capped at 60fps to keep it synced with the monitor and avoid screen tearing.

Also worth checking the game settings. Some games have a built in fps limiter (ontop of VSync) and it may be enabled and defaulted to 60 on the games you've tried.

Oddly I've done something and it now displays 120fps on 1080p. But not on 1440p. I suspect that's due to the graphics card being gtx 1650ti. Do you think that's the case?

Eventually he will have a better pc so I want him to be able to use 1440p at a higher refresh rate. The user manual suggests the monitor can display 1440p 144hz over hdmi.

I think you are limited by what HDMI can do. I am not sure what hdmi ports you have? I couldn’t see it in specs.

Acer website is odd as it mixes up specs for that model and I can’t find your model number manual on the website. I think you would need HDMI 2.0. My monitor (acer) has 2x HDMI ports and a DP. When I switch ports the screen reports either ‘HDMI’ (which is 1.4) or ‘HDMI 2.0’.

Try the other HDMI port on the monitor. You might have the 1.4 port? Does it have 2 hdmi ins?

Yeah it does have two. I even emailed Acer last week pointing out that the website was wrong and contradicts itself on the specs and asked a few questions they just replied with a link to the specs that I had told them were wrong :fp:

Ta for that, I'm expecting some delay in shipping, but good to know.

Currently having a 'mare settling on a mobo. Thought I'd found a decent value x570 board earlier, but then read that the RAM speed is limited to 2666mhz standard, which seems incredibly slow? Most places I've looked recommend 3600mhz ram. I'm totally lost on the difference between the B550 and X570. Is it just the use of PCIE4 that differentiates them?

Also, what are M.2 drives? I'm seeing them mentioned a lot, but I'm not really sure what they are. They sound like SSDs, but they look like sticks of RAM. I currently have 1 SSD, that I only bought like last year, and the speed on that was a revelation, but it's just normal sata connection. Are these being phased or or surpassed? Do I need an M.2 and should I be paying more attention to how they fit with any mobo purchases?

As features go it is just PCIE 4.0 that really is the difference.

M.2 are an SSD form factor. You plug them right in to the motherboard. No cable or power lead needed. Just be aware that it may disable a SATA port or two. Which is fine.
