Very good value for money if it was a UK build. No idea compared to the HK market.

I'm looking at the $8000 bundle (about 770GBP) here, possibly with the RAM upgrade (because last time I knew anything about PCs I seem to remember that RAM was a good... thing); https://www.ironcladpcs.com/quick-builds

What's that like for value for money if buying it as a bundle? Picking up each piece and putting it together myself isn't really an option.

You're getting an older motherboard chipset there (the 450 as opposed to the more modern 550 and "enthusiast" 570), a slower Ryzen CPU (the sweet spot seems to be the 3700 at the moment but the new 4000 series chips are set to hit towards the end of the year) and the decent 2060. The RAM is fine as is, there's no need for more than 16gb in that setup, but the hard-drive is a little small.

It's a decent mid-tier gaming rig that should be fine for VR and the price seems really reasonable!

Awesome, cheers guys!

I think, all things being equal, I could probably source the parts damn cheap out here, but there’s a certain ‘expat tax’ when doing gooseberry fool like this locally. We don’t really have mid-range retailers here, there’s the big retail like Fortress who are basically like Currys, and then the next level down is one-man stores in dodgy markets where I reckon if I had the language and the confidence I could knock 20% off the price. But I have neither the time nor the patience, and strawberry float I’ve heard horror stories, so if you’re saying that’s a reasonable price by UK standards I’ll go with them.

Might jazz it up and go for the higher models if the gains are worth it.

If you can, I'd wait a few months. Like I mentioned the new AMD CPUs are hitting soon (hopefully, they're being really cagey about them) and obviously the new NVidia GPUs are about to hit. It's likely you'll get a much, much bigger bang for your buck if you can hold on until October/November.

Right, I've come for assistance. I know bugger all about PC parts.

I've got 2k to build a PC, I'm hoping to get a 3080 when they come out next week.

That's what I'm looking at.

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/3xs-gamer-rtx-amd-ryzen-7-3700x-16gb-ddr4-10gb-nvidia-rtx-3080-1tb-m2-ssd-2tb-win-10

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/27-asus-tuf-vg279wq-monitor-va-2560x1440-165hz-1ms-freesync-1500r-30001-400cd-m-hdmi-dp

I'm genuinely terrified of somehow blowing it up if I make it myself, That's why I've gone for a prebuild.

Any suggestions, or ways how to not blow something up?

I couldn't wait, got all the parts and built the thing myself. Has taken me about 8 hours from getting out of bed to head to the parts store to now where the whole thing is built and up and running.

Things that were easier than expected; dealing with the CPU which I was shitting bricks over was a doddle. Pretty much impossible to strawberry float up.

Things that were harder than expected; Getting these seemingly diddy and completely unimportant wires into the right slot so that the power button actually worked.

Things I didn't expect to be an issue; strawberry floating cables. strawberry floating cables man. Also, I have this extra cooling unit and I am genuinely unsure as to where it should go. I know how to hook up the cooler to the processor (it's currently running with the standard intel fan rather than this fancy water cooled thing I'm talking about), and I get in theory how the unit is meant to fit in, but actually finding space is crazy.

No rush to put it in, but it's a project.

The only strawberry floating kick in the shins? With everything booted, everything running, all software downloaded and it won't detect my Oculus Quest, which was the only reason I invested in all this. I'm getting the same kind of noises I get when I use a dodgy cable with a phone and it can't decide whether it's connected or not, so I'm hoping it's just a dodgy cable which is an easy fix.

Still, talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

You plugging it into USB? Make sure you're not plugging it into a usb 2 port when it might need to be 3.

No, it's definitely in the only USB 3 slot on the case.

Yea, t'was even printed on the mother board I think. Tried removing and replacing the cable already too.

I do think it's a cable issue, as although it's the same place I got the Quest from it seemed a bit sketchy.

Quest Link is pretty picky about what USB 3 cables it will work with for some reason. Have you tried wireless streaming with Virtual Desktop at all? That's what I use, and I find it works fine, and not having a cable plugged into the headset is a massive bonus, too.

Yea, I can do the wireless streaming with Virtual Desktop, but that's not a viable path for VR gaming is it? As I haven't been able to Sideload anything.

Works perfectly for me, and Staydead as well, I believe.

Sideloading is a doddle, just download sidequest, which doesn't need a USB 3 to interact with your headset.

Try one on the motherboard itself.

I might be being 'Whooshed' here but the external 3.0 slot connects to the only 3.0 connector on the motherboard.

I do everything via Virtual Desktop. It's amazing. It looks better for me at least than Link does. I play all my games wirelessly!

I didn't see how much that machine was but the things that stuck out were the older motherboard chipset again and the smaller PSU. Also the RGB RAM sticks :dread: But a good build generally I think.

And, personal preference etc but curved monitors are a scam.

Sometimes it makes a difference whether a device connects to a port on the case (through a cable to the 3.0 port on the motherboard), or a port directly on the back of the motherboard. Might not be what's at fault here, but couldn't hurt to try.

especially at that size, only go for curved on ultra-wide monitors.

Make it yourself, it's impossible to blow anything up. The worst you can do is burn your house down.

Seriously though, they've made it so you can't put the wrong connector into the wrong slot anymore. There's very, very little chance of you strawberry floating it up.
