Is an antistatic band that important? I've never used one whilst upgrading...

I've always just periodically grounded myself on a radiator or something.

Yeah I've gone with the touch a radiator approach in the past and had no problems, but the project I'm on at work has like a boxful of antistatic wristbands so I thought I'd grab one for a change!

Been spending some of today playing through some games that my old machine struggled to run well with everything whacked up to full in the settings.

Seeing a new machine blitz games that brought and old one to its knees will never not be enjoyable! :toot:

Think I'm going to drop the blu-ray drive from my new PC plans. Realistically I'm probably never going to use it, can't even remember the last time I used my DVD drive and that means I can switch for a LIAN LI LANCOOL II GAMING case which has glowing reviews.

Lian Li make some fantastic cases. My NCase M1 was put together in their factory and the build quality is top notch. Lancool II looks good and comes with some nice features for the price. Runs a bit loud and warm for my tastes though. #thermalsnob

I've never not chosen the cheapest case that can fit all the correct gooseberry fool inside. I'd use a cardboard box if I could get away with it

Fractal Design all the way. :datass:

Rarely leaving the house this year has of course given me wandering thoughts that I could build one of those desk PCs for a cleaner look. Then I look at desk cases and they are the most hideous things to have existed.

I sometimes see those builds where people lay things out on a flat board and think it looks cool, but it just too impractical for me.

I always used to go with the cheapest case I could buy, or just reusing an existing one (my last case served me well for 13 years). So far I'm pleased with the case I went for this time, it wasn't too expensive and it really has helped to keep things noticeably quieter. I've mainly played a few older titles on the new build today, stuff from the last 5 years or so, and it has barely been audible when playing them which is great!

Given I'm unlikely to be able to source a 3080 before Brexit transition period ends, I think I'm going to buy every component but the GPU before that as prices could fluctuate wildly. Switch my existing 970 into the new machine or buy a placeholder card?

This.

While I do like my current case (Raijintek Metis Evo) its not a patch on my previous two Fractal ones, the last one (Node 304) is still sitting under my desk and there's a definite temptation to try to cram my current hardware in it.

Thinking of turning it into a NAS/media server.

I probably won't be even contemplating building a new system until well into next year after a dalliance with the idea a few weeks ago, but I've been thinking about what to do with my old parts when I do. I'm contemplating making a tiny little ITX or mATX system as a family/homework/streaming PC.

I'm very much in the "it's a strawberry floating box" camp when it comes to cases though. Currys have a SFF case for about thirty quid which will probably do the job I want perfectly.

I love my *squints at invoice* beQuiet! Dark Base Pro 900 rev2 because if your case isn’t at least twice the size of your torso what are you even doing with your life

This may be a quite astute move.

I would stick with the 970 tbh. It can trundle along for the next few months.

https://www.resetera.com/threads/rumour ... dz.310564/

NVIDIA allegedly cancels its December launch of GeForce RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3070 16GB. This still very fresh information comes from two independent sources

lol. Literally everything about this launch has been a disaster.

I am wondering if this is due to the leaks about the Navi cards.
