Ah fair enough. I've flat out given up on upgrading my GPU and/or PSU until the new year. It sucks.

Looking at hopefully moving my PC gaming back to a desk based setup sometime in the near future so I'm in the market for a new monitor.

Is it worth spending some extra pennies to jump into the G-Sync side of things? I've still never actually seen any of the VRR tech in action so haven't really got a feel for whether it's worth limiting my search to those screens that include it or whether to ignore that side of things.

Nvidia caved and you can now enable G-sync for freesync monitors, although they do not guarantee it will work unless they have validated the monitor as approved (I'm guessing they have list on their site). So yeah, not worth shelling out for a monitor with a g-sync module considering the premium.

Yeah I remember reading about that, I'm not fussed on Freesync vs. G-sync as long as it works! How beneficial is the tech in general though, does it really make much of a difference to how things look/feel?

So it's important to distinguish between "Gsync" and "Gsync compatible". Gsync monitors have specific hardware that communicates with your GPU to stabilise the image. Gsync compatible monitors are all software based solutions

I have a Gsync and it means I never have to turn on Vsync, which usually saves 10-15fps. As meep says though, you're paying for it.

Yeah I've seen some listed as "compatible" which I assumed was the software based solution. Most information online seems to indicate that you won't really spot the difference between the two though?

That, I have no idea about. I think you're better off going for the compatible option as it won't cost you an extra 200 quid or so!

So I now have two cancelled orders for a PSU, neither of which has given me my money back and one of which hasn't acknowledged my cancellation. Incredibly frustrating

Really I expect g-sync to be done away with entirely in a number of years, it has kind of lost the standards war, which it was always doomed to when forced to compete against a universal model rather than expensive proprietary tech. Nvidia are just kind of phasing it out. Personally I would buy a freesync monitor and make sure it is g-sync compatible. Then at least you have the option of using an AMD card in future if they crush nvidia like they did intel.

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom - The Prince's Edition - Steam - £10.49, bargain as the Prince's Edition comes with the Season Pass. After getting the first game dirt cheap on Switch I'll nab the 2nd game too.

Big day today:

Not one but 2 strawberry floating PSUs turn up :fp: Should be fine, I got the one I really wanted and the other is from a place with a great returns policy

Finally got to install my 3080. RDR2 went from a benchmark of 43fps to 111, and Control with full raytracing on High runs at a rock solid 110fps. This is all using my 4 year old i5-6600k too.

It's also silent. It's much quieter than my old card, and my old card wasn't noisy at all.

Amazing scenes.

See this is really interesting and what nobody else seems to have setup wise. I have a 6600k and was considering 'just' getting a 3080 to boost my VR stuff, so hearing that combo works well makes it an interim option. Obviously a motherboard and processor would be the best option, but it's good to know.

Yeah, I was amazed at the step up provided by just the new card. I will say that CoD Cold War ran like cold gooseberry fool though: even with ray tracing off, DLSS on and a bunch of options set to medium or low I could barely get it past 45fps. It was also really juddery for some weird reason.

I will also say that, as nice as it is, so far ray tracing has failed to blow me away. Control is the game I have that uses it the most, but even then it's just something nice to have rather than mind blowing.

All the videos I've seen of Ray tracing in game, really don't impress. You could fake a lot of it with pre baked reflections and most of the time you wouldn't be able to tell. The fact that videos often have to zoom in and pause to show you a benefit really doesn't say much for it. Give it another generation I'm sure it'll be amazing though, but at the moment it's not that great.

The only game footage I've seen where it makes a noticeable difference, seems to be Watch Dogs Legion, given that the game is set in a city full of different reflective surfaces.


Raytracing stuff is about 30 seconds in.

I've been playing a lot of Control recently and swapping between RT and non-RT, I do think there is a discernible improvement to how scenes look with ray tracing enabled, some of the lighting has considerably more weight to it, for want of a better explanation! There's lots of subtle things like catching a reflection in something where you know it should be but normally a game wouldn't have it is a really nice improvement to immersion.

But yeah ultimately it's no game changer and the performance cost is high so I'm not expecting to use it as standard.

My new monitor has arrived, got a LG UltraGear 27GL850-B for £339.00 (and Quidco) from Currys. 144 Hz, 1440P, 1ms and and official NVIDIA G-sync compatible sticker.
