By the time the silicon shortage has eased, they'll be releasing snippets about the next generation of CPUs and GPUs. I can wait a year for a full upgrade I think.

I would predict the next generation is going to be barely a step from this one, they'll want to squeeze as much life out of the R&D they did for the current generation given how limited the productions have been

tl:Dr - CDPR finally enabled ray tracing on non-Nvida cards. AMD's big old thousand dollar 6800XT cannot handle it.

Ouch. DLSS only saved nvidia to be fair.

Depends what you're wanting to use it for - type of game, target resolution, settings etc.

The 2060 is still a capable card but it's kind of in that limbo space now where it's far enough off the pace of the top cards that you'll definitely have to make compromises but at the same time it still has plenty of horsepower and if you are willing to tweak settings appropriately it will probably still get you 1080p60 on most stuff for a while yet and probably be fine for 1440p as well

Wouldn't be any higher than 1440p ultrawide but I'd be fine with 1080p ultrawide.

Okay, Ultrawide does put extra strain on things but you'll probably still get solid performance out of the 2060. Future proofing would be a possible concern - how long that card stays "competitive" at higher resolutions might be a concern, but then it supports DLSS and if more games use that then that will help it keep pace

Couple of benchmarking videos that might be helpful:

What would be the recommended card for the next step up e.g. holding 60 at 1440p ultrawide?

On a different topic, I broke down my really old gaming pc (Pentium 4 era, last upgraded for oblivion!) last weekend to recycle what I could, and have some components that I don't know what to do with. I've got the graphics card, PSU, ram and optical drives. Is there any point in trying to sell them or am I better off just taking them to the electronics part of the tip when I can go?

If you're going any higher than a 2060 you'll be wanting a 3xxx series which are massively overpriced wherever they appear these days. In fact, unless you're absolutely desperate for a new card, I'd honestly just...not. You're going to get dicked over, even on the 2xxx series.

That is not massively helpful. Sorry.

In other news, NVIDIA have now activated adjustable BAR on the 3XXX series cards. No idea what this actually means, but it's leading to some pretty drastic FPS increases in some games

The downside? It requires a compatible CPU and Motherboard (if you've bought either in the last year you should be covered) and a BIOS update of the latter.

I mean something like a 3060 or 3060 Ti would probably be a good fit but I imagine they are still like gold dust at this point.

It's a tricky time to be in the market for a GPU at the moment, it's a case of picking the best option you can get hold of now or else waiting for things to settle back down again

I would have thought the hassle of listing and selling them is more effort than it's worth at this point but it never hurts to check just in case anything you've got is inexplicably in high demand!

Anything I cant easily re-use in another build I tend to just take to the recycling centre these days.

Depends what games you want to play. I have a 1440p 144hz ultra wide (amazing) on a 3070. It’s overkill for older games and they easily run at 60 with good graphics. Division 2 runs at 90+.

The problem is the graphics market is rubbish. A 3060Ti is what you need, unless you can find a 2070super for a reasonable price. I think those are the 2 cards you want so you don’t have to upgrade again when the new games start to come again. Anything better is a bonus.

I think on 3060/2060 you can run games at 60, but you’ll be turning settings down, then when stuff like halo comes, I think they’ll struggle.

I’ll post some pictures later of ultrawide 1440p. You’ll see FPS and GPU usage and what sort of graphics quality (pretty much all of these are maxed out (not division 2 as I think it needs more than 8Gb VRAM)).

I'm a bit weird, but I like afterburner running and I am messing with cooling at the minute.
