PostHumans will wipe themselves out!

Just finished watching Seaspiracy (on Netflix) which looks into the plastics on our beaches and in our seas only to discover the amount of Sharks being killed for their fins and Dolphins being killed because they are eating the fish in our seas. They go on to find out that it's the fishing industry that is killing our marine life 150x more than plastics would and it's messing with the ecosystem. It's a hidden danger that isn't being talked about because the people against plastics all have connection with the fishing trade.
Stop eating fish isn't the only option as your tax money also goes to fund fishing. It's the fishing nets that are killing a lot of life in our waters yet the blame is always on plastic (also an issue).

It's worth a watch , they think that if things don't improve the waters could be barron as soon as 2048 where in turn would affect the human race.

Each can of tuna you buy that has dolphin friendly is basically a lie and the blue tick on the side means not a lot as the organisation themselves have admitted that the fishermen do as they please and won't confirm 100% that Dolphin's won't be killed.

That's just one of the topics I wanted to bring up and I know the topic defers from my main issue which is basically that we move more and more to ending the human race ourselves.

Yeah I'm thinking having seen this that the least I can do here is to stop buying canned tuna. Horrendous scenes.

We should all of course do the things in our own power to effect change but the reality is that these real issues are going to need the pressure of national governments and international agreements to make any difference. And even then they need enforcing - just look how few strawberry floats are given about whale/dolphin hunting in some places despite it being banned.

I watched that Seaspiracy and whilst it's a good programme, it just seems like there's an overwhelming amount of power behind the fishing industry, driven by humanity's insatiable demand for fish to eat, that it just seems hopeless. How the hell are you supposed to fight back in a way that has any actual impact? :(

Also I love eating fish so this complicates things :slol:

No country in the world is doing enough about this issue and people really seem to care enough to actually make the kind of changes that our necessary. It sort of weird thinking I might actually see if not the fall of humanity the end of this age of globalisation. In a lot of ways I have lived through a golden age of humanity.

Oddly I was just reading an article about this show. I haven't seen it, but will give it a watch.

Even if some claims are exaggerated /unscientific we really do have a responsibility to fish in a balanced, kind (as possible) and sustainable way

If fish needs to double in price to support this then I'm all for it.

Totally my problem. I do plan to cut down (not that I eat loads anyway)

Some of these Netflix documentaries have already changed my views on things.

Black Fish - Stopped me ever wanting to go to a sea park again
Social Dilemma - Has got me to stop notifications on Social Media apps

Can't believe they called it Seaspiracy and not Conspirasea.

I keep thinking it should be a documentary about pirates instead of fishing.

For the new thread title, I’m just going to quote something I said last year, which I stand by:

rinks wrote:Global warming causing widespread crop destruction and failure of the food supply chain, leading to rioting and societal disruption, then global power grid and communications breakdown, collapse of civilisation and mass population decline, until the human race ceases to be the dominant species, existing only in small communities and no longer endangering all other lifeforms on the planet. Hopefully just after my own expiration.

That’s me being positive! It’s the best thing that could happen. Humans got lucky with technology but strawberry floated everything up and don’t deserve to carry on, especially as they’re on the cusp of taking their destruction beyond the confines of Earth.

Given that Star Trek is a historical documentary written by a time traveler I think we all know the answer.

Wasn't that a David Baddiel tweet?! Totally agree, they messed up the pun.

I need to watch this, but I've seen a few articles pointing out that it's not exactly an objective look at the issue. I also find claims like the sea being barren by 2048 quite hard to believe, those sorts of hyperbole claims always make me sceptical.

That said, the issue with plastic in the sea and fishing practices which aren't sustainable really need to be fixed no doubt. It requires massive international cooperation. Europe and the Americas could and probably will tighten up at some point, but then you have the far East which likely won't agree to any restrictions.

I'm torn as I'm on a bit of a seafood diet at the moment and I generally love eating fish.
