It is a little worrying that this isn’t the first game we’re hearing similar rumours about (the others being Fable, Everwild and goodness knows what else we haven’t heard about), makes me wonder if the way Xbox are overseeing them is a little too lax? Obviously not advocating poor working conditions (or the infamous crunch) by any means but it does make me wonder when it’s not just one studio having issues. Are Xbox waiting too long before asking for an update? Thinking it’ll be a lot further on than it actually is when they’ve seen it? I know modern game development is anything but quick, but Fable was first announced in July 2020, this was announced late 2021? So you’d have thought both would have been eager to show something off, even if it was just an update with a few more finished looking screenshots but we’ve seen nothing since announcement and it really doesn’t sound like we’ll see anything this year either.

Of all of Microsoft’s announced titles, this is the one I’m most interested in. They’re having an absolute mare releasing anything though which is why I’m not buying a Series X (or more likely its slimmer replacement) until games actually start getting released.

Fable is another one that probably won’t see the light of day until 2025 at the earliest. Just waiting for something currently scheduled for 2023 to slip into 2024.

Which new MS Studios do you expect to be releasing games?

Obsidian under MS ownship released Outer Worlds in 2019, Grounded in 2020 & Pentiment in 2022.
Double Fine under MS ownship released Psychonauts 2 in 2021.
InXile under MS ownship released Wasteland 3 in 2020 then DLCs and now working on a big RPG.
Undead Labs just before MS ownship released State of Decay 2 in 2018 and has put out a lot of meaty updates.
Bethesda under MS ownship released Deathloop in 2021 & Ghostwire: Tokyo in 2022.
Playground games under MS ownship released Forza Horizon in 2018 & 2021.
Compulsion Games released We Happy Few in 2018.
Ninja Theory released Hellblade in 2017 under MS ownship released Bleeding Edge in 2020.

Also, the Iniative was only founded in June 2018, and per Wikipedia only has 56 employees which is tiny for a studio making a triple AAA game. I know they're partnering with other studios on this but it's not a huge surprise they haven't hit the ground running with their first release.

Game is still in earliest stages of development, at least two to three years away. Pretty much as everyone expected.

Why? The answer isn't glamorous, but rather wrapped up in the realities of game development. The project has seen roadblock after roadblock, with problems such as a fraught co-development partnership, a pandemic, technological challenges, an ongoing exodus of significant talent, and unclear direction from management keeping the game in development limbo. And while a new partnership with Crystal Dynamics appears to finally be bearing fruit, multiple sources who have worked on the game recently say that Perfect Dark is still "in the earliest stages" of development, estimating that it is still roughly two to three years away from being ready for release.

Creative Assembly involved early on but there was a mismatch. Crystal Dynamics has basically taken over the game

In the middle of 2021, with Certain Affinity gone and the studio bleeding talent, leadership at The Initiative had to figure out who, exactly, would be doing the bulk of the development work on the project going forward. And in September, a savior arrived in Gallagher's old studio: Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics. According to one former Crystal Dynamics employee, the plan was for their studio to supplement and support The Initiative's vision – not to fully take over. But rather quickly it became apparent to Crystal Dynamics that Perfect Dark and The Initiative were going to need a lot more help than they had realized.

Xbox is "remarkably" hands off

Xbox took a different approach. In direct response to my specific inquiries, Xbox provided contextual information from past interviews with Darrell Gallagher about the purpose and direction of The Initiative and its Perfect Dark reboot, all of which complimented what my sources told me and has been included in the narrative above where relevant. But Xbox also connected me with Booty following its Xbox Games Showcase in June for an interview about its larger strategy for its studios, as well as regarding The Initiative more specifically.

Developers from all three studios involved with Perfect Dark told me that throughout development, Xbox has been remarkably hands-off with the project – not unlike its reported attitude toward Arkane's Redfall. One described the parent company's involvement as simply "giving us money and letting us decide how to move forward and requesting milestone updates."

Finally starting to get moving. Game is FPS balancing combat and espionage with emphasis on spy gadgets, some experimental movement tech, and a focus on narrative. Maybe episodic.

The good news, though, is that The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics – or rather "Team Perfect Dark" – seem to at last be making progress. Perfect Dark is now further on than Certain Affinity's vertical slice from 2021 and with stronger foundations, though it still has a long way to go. All my sources with recent knowledge of its status say it's still in pre-production, roughly two to three years away from release. It's still an FPS balancing combat and espionage, with an emphasis on spy gadgets, some experimental movement tech, and a focus on narrative. Recent plans seem to be leaning toward some kind of episodic format – though the exact form and shape of it has yet to be determined, and could still change entirely before release.

Today, we got a first look at gameplay from Perfect Dark, The Initiative’s highly anticipated reboot of the secret agent series featuring the iconic Joanna Dark.

In the near future, Earth is struck by a series of global disasters, bringing ecosystems around the world to the verge of collapse. In the all-new Perfect Dark game, you experience the journey of Joanna Dark, dataDyne’s elite agent, as she hunts down the world’s most wanted criminal, Daniel Carrington, to uncover the mysteries behind the technological breakthroughs that could threaten the lives of millions of people.

The new trailer showed us Joanna’s descent into the game’s Cairo setting, offered us a glimpse at the mysteries behind this near-future ecological sci-fi story, and introduced us to a game that blends fluid traversal, gadgets, close-quarters combat, gunplay, stealth, and more to create the ultimate secret agent experience.

World building that looks that good is just always ruined by an NPC rotating 45 degrees on the spot before aimlessly pacing a few feet in a random direction. There's also a jump cut at the exact point an NPC seems to phase through a gate.

The combat looks good, but it also seems to be presented in a very linear way, making the traversal seem superfluous as it's basically a linear traversal puzzle with level design cues.

I immediately think of Deus Ex which I don't recall giving off that kind of vibe. Or Dishonoured. I feels like there are genuine choices and endless pathways in those games. Seems overly crafted to me I guess? Like they're really trying to just finish it.

It's an early gameplay preview so should give it plenty of growing room to be fair.

I only had brief opportunities to play PD64 but it was my kind of game. Just remembering Arkane was shuttered so this will fill some gaps for some people.

The campaign looks slick but PD64 remains one of the best FPSs nearly 25 years later because of its bottomless multiplayer options. I want to see if they’ve managed to port that over to a sustainable online setting whilst also offering some split-screen.

Hard to gauge based on that trailer, on the one hand it could be setting itself up as more of a Dishonored/Deus Ex style "play your way" experience with lots of options at your disposal to manipulate situations.

On the other it could well just be a very scripted/linear experience and all of the interesting things are just used for that one purpose shown in the trailer...

The XBLA port works perfectly online if you ever wanted to go back to it. We played it a few weeks back and had a blast. But it would be great to see them carry that over into the new game.

If not, I'm holding out hope for Agent 64: Spies Never Die to scratch that itch (When it finally releases anyway). I know it will have co-op at least.

That's how I felt watching it and was quite literally empathising with anyone who has been waiting for a proper sequel (not counting PD0 since that was basically a mildly good multiplayer and that was pretty much it) for so long. It's hard not to watch blowout trailers like this without extreme scepticism that it could all just be an ABCD sequence or that's a 2% slice of the game and the rest just trails off or is gooseberry fool and full or bugs etc.

The studio has a good track record though. I'm not even sure why I follow the Xbox stuff anymore seeing as I've not had one since I sold it for a Wii U. Presumably it will come out on PC as well this time.

I'm sometimes thinking the Xbox series S is better value than a PS5 though so might jump ship if there's a good deal. Had a PS4 but it wasn't mine.

It is great to see Perfect Dark is coming back, but I'm not too sure about the trailer.

It seems like there is a lot going on at once and I'm sure they will reveal more details soon.
