Perry: "Sony has no chance of making money on the PS3"

Acclaim boss David Perry has said that Sony will not be able to make a decent profit on sales of the PlayStation 3 due to selling the system at a loss.

During his keynote speech at GCDC yesterday, the outspoken games developer claimed that the company has lost more money on the PlayStation 3 than it made during the five year peak sales period of the PlayStation 2.

"Because of the cost of making the PlayStation 3 and because they sold it at a loss, Sony basically has pretty much no chance of making money on the PS3, because it's lost more money than they made during the entire peak of the PlayStation 2 - it's not going to happen again for Sony,” stated Perry.

"If they release the PlayStation 4 and have an even more expensive console and raise the cost of games by ten dollars, that would not be good," he added.

Perry suggested that Sony's much talked about ten-year plan for the PlayStation 3 is the company's chance to claw back costs of development in the long-term.

"So this is going to force them to make the PS3 last longer and they're kind of positioning to do that," he said.

I wish I had that sort of insight.

Sony have pretty much backed themselves into a corner. They used to talk only lightly about the idea of following the PS2's footsteps but now they talk about it every chance they get because it's an absolute requisite that they do so. I still think they will make a good return on it though, but they can't afford to do the same thing with the PS4.

I don't think that matters are as bleak as that for Sony, but they must still be haemorrhaging money on each console sold. Still, they could make it back if we really are talking about a ten year sales arc. That is a very big "if" though!

It means that the sagacity of including blu-ray is once more a moot point, as is the decision to go for a console that people would "work more hours to pay for" in mad-Ken speak. For a while it looked like it was beginning to pay off as many PS3 sales, particularly in the states and here, seem to have been driven as much as by the cheap blu-ray option as much as by the games. If the initial (and continuing) loss is so massive, however, then it may not matter how big a plus point bluray may eventually become: the money pit might well be too big by then.

We'd need more accurate figures to know for sure though.

Didn't Acclaim go bankrupt? In which case he knows all about how to not make money.

I tried to get Dave Perry to compete in GGGC once. True story!
