I thought it was awful. The graphics and controls were dire. Needs a helluva lot of work if this is anything to go by!

Tried to play a game over the weekend and ended up in blank black screen two times after matching up with an opponent.

Honestly, it was probably for the best! I uninstalled it after the first game.

PES officially re-named efootball... and goes digital-only and free-to-play  .

Edit:

t sounds like Konami will sell individual game modes, too. "In the future, certain game modes will be sold as optional DLC, giving players the freedom to build an experience that follows their interests," Konami said.

Oh boy, it's gonna be a payment-driven monster, isn't it? :( .

Really not happy about this. I'm over the age of 40 and therefore naturally cynical about F2P full stop. Surely FIFA's whole 'pay for stuff' model focuses on the players you're getting. I can't see people going crazy for this while the licences remain patchy.

PES on PS2 is still peak console football, whichever one you choose. Yes, current FIFA looks and sounds miles better, but nothing beats the way classic PES plays. It's been dead for years to me, but still sad to see this once iconic brand killed off (as was ISS, to be fair) and replaced with eFootball - that by necessity will be designed around milking people dry.

There was a time from around 1997 to 2003 where you couldn't move for the sheer number of football titles. Yes, there were far too many, but at least it made for fierce competition and choice.

My peak PES playing years were:

1995 - 2002: Goal Storm / ISS Pro / PES on the PS1
2012 - 2014: PES on the PS3
2015 - 2019: PES on the PS4

I had a near-decade break during which I didn't like PES as much but, for me, those PS3/PS4 years are when I was really into the game; and that was almost exclusively on the Online Divisions mode.

I will try out the new eFootball but, being "free to play" (free to start), I have big reservations about it. I wish there were more competition in the football game market; FIFA dominates but personally it's not my bag and the other titles are low-budget indie games. It feels like there is room for a new bigger-budget, arcade-y title; something like Konami's old International Superstar Soccer series.

I've been making do with the lite version for a while now as only want the odd quick game, so doesn't bother me as much that it's going f2p. I'm more concerned about how that recent beta played though; it was dire.

Something like this on Switch would suit me fine.

I'm pretty annoyed at this current direction they are taking. I always buy and play PES for it's Master League, and all this FTP nonsense is very worrying.

Been looking forward to this one for ages as they didn't release a proper version last year, and this is all just so disappointing so far.

A throwback football game that looked and played like a 90s game would be brilliant. Especially if they do disjointed commentary at random volumes throughout.

Goal Storm was excellent for this; some of the quotes and how they were said were just hilarious. I recall two... when someone got sent off the commentator exclaimed "It's an early bath for that one!" and, when there was a hard shot, "It's a scorcher!". The SFX were tremendous as well; when a 'keeper took a goal kick, the movement effect was like a car moving over a mound of paper and glass. Brilliant!

Not yet. Other modes are still to be developed and announced but the focus seems to initially be on PvP.

Or PvBarca/Madrid/PSG, to give it its correct title

It looks like there will only be 9 clubs at launch, and given that Real Madrid and PSG aren't licenced, it could be a while after launch until they are added.

A great thing about PES was that - on PS4 and PC - you could use option files to update the clubs, kits and associated details. The licensing issue didn't really matter; an hour of updating once a year enabled one to play with all the teams looking great. I wonder if this will be possible in eFootball?

Apparently it will be added at a later date. Whether it will be paid content or not is another matter. My guess is that it will be.

It was pretty clear this was on the cards when they introduced the eFootball subtitle, but it’s rotten to see the death of a grand old franchise in such a way. I always saw an unbroken line from International Superstar Soccer on the SNES to Pro Evolution Soccer in the present, but it feels like that is over now.

It's amazing to think that Konami had two popular football game franchises and they ran alongside each other for almost a decade. Konami started by releasing Hyper Soccer on the NES in 1992. They then proceeded with two separate studios producing two separate series:

"international Superstar Soccer" (1994 - 2003)

Originally developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka (KCEO).

International Superstar Soccer >

"Pro Evolution Soccer" / "Winning Eleven" (1995 onwards)

Originally developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo (KCET).

Goal Storm > ISS Pro > ISS Pro Evolution Soccer > Pro Evolution Soccer > eFootball PES > eFootball

It's pretty odd how the series borrowed the ISS branding for a period!

I really enjoyed both of these series. ISS was always the more arcade-styled game with faster, simpler (although still excellent!) gameplay whilst PES took a more simulation-styled approach. I started out with ISS on the SNES and then ISS 64 was the game that caused me to buy an N64; whilst ISS Pro (PES!) on the PS1 got me hooked fro:the off and it was the starting point for a series that I've enjoyed so much over the years, mainly on PlayStation consoles.

I just hope that eFootball can somehow match up to the tremendous heritage that these two series have.
