Long before he was the boss of EA Sports, and even before he was the boss of Xbox, Peter Moore used to be a big deal at SEGA. Now he's admitted it was he decided the company should stop making games machines and just make games instead.

Speaking to the Guardian, Moore got all misty eyed when talking about SEGA's final foray into the hardware market.

"Dreamcast was a phenomenal 18 months of pain, heartache, euphoria... We thought we had it," he said.

"But then Playstation came out... And of course, EA didn't publish which left a big hole, not only in sports but in other genres. We ended up that Christmas period not being able to get to where we needed to be - we weren't far short, we just couldn't get that critical mass."

In other words, Moore explained, SEGA Japan set a target that just couldn't be reached. "I can't remember the exact figures - but we had to make N hundreds of millions of dollars by the holiday season, and shift N millions of units of hardware, otherwise we just couldn't sustain the business.

"So on January 31st 2001 we said SEGA is leaving hardware - somehow I got to make that call, not the Japanese. I had to fire a lot of people, it was not a pleasant day."

According to Moore, there was no way the Dreamcast could compete with PS2 by this stage - so a tough decision had to be made. "SEGA had the option of pouring in more money and going bankrupt and they decided they wanted to live to fight another day," he stated. "So we licked our wounds, ate some humble pie and went to Sony and Nintendo to ask for dev kits."

Moore's philosophical about it all, however. "In the end, it didn't work out," he observed. "It was tough, but those were great days and I've never met anybody who regretted buying a Dreamcast."

Thats not really what he is saying though is it.

You could just as easily title this topic...

Peter Moore: "I saved SEGA"

Yes. The article quite clearly says that he thinks if they'd put out another console after the Dreamcast Sega would have gone bankrupt...and who's to say he's wrong really.

So by getting out of the console manufacturing business, he 'saved' Sega.

When are they going to fight then?

I am unbeliveably disappointed by their games since the demise of the dreamcast, they need to start by giving us some classics that are AAA games!

If sega had the foresight they could have brought out the wii before nintendo did!

And he worked for Microsoft too. For you, this must be like hitting the anti-jackpot!

All in all the Dreamcast had the potential to be the best games console ever created, if people bought it we would have a very different playing field right now and more excitement. Thank god nintendo are still alive and kicking because if they weren't the soul of videogaming would have been destroyed.

And your point is?

I'm just saying that its a negative spin to take from that interview, when you'd be just as right to say that in the interview he says he 'Saved Sega'.

It was actually meant in funny way like the article reflects and how Peter Moore talks about it.

The title is in no way meant to be negative just funny :fp:

In a way, it's nice that the Dreamcast lived only a short while. Like all heroic figures, it didn't live long enough to outstay its welcome and remains a fan favourite among console owners (me included). We can only wonder what other titles it may eventually have played host to, but it was not meant to be. I regularly scour second hand shops for old DC games and I keep adding to my collection whenever I find them. It's always a pleasure to fire up the DC - the 'special' console in my collection - and replay a few of those fantastic games...

I think "I saved Sega from bankruptcy" would be a better title alround personally.

Its both funnier and represents what he says more accurately.

I don't think anyone could realistically call Sega "saved" at this point.

You don't seriously expect them to re-enter the hardware field, do you?

Easier.said.than.done.

Anyway, since the DC they have given us great gaming experiences - F-Zero GX, Super Monkey Ball, SEGA Superstars Tennis (apparently it was actually good), the continuation of the Total War series, and there's that new House Of The Dead game, to name but a few.

CONSOLEGAMING EXCLUSIVE: "Sony is soulless."

At least now you're blaming "the people" for Dreamcast's failure, as you should be. Moore's off the hook then, it would seem.

Ofcourse it is not Moores fault, but I do believe SEGA could have given it one last shot, or rather I hoped they had.

You know I used to savour the next sega release, now they are not even on my radar and I feel sad for that, they deserve to be at the top for their past glories.

Am I reading that wrong? To me it reads that he didn't have much input at all into the decision, but retrospectively the correct decision was made.
