Photoshop help. Threshold

How the strawberry float do I adjust the threshold on a dark person to get an image I prefer?
Example here, this is an asian friend, I threshold him on 128, he comes out looking normal.

Whenever I try it with my dark friend, I get a shite picture.
These are just rough pictures and that. I know that the picture of my dark friends are too dark for threshold, but can anyone recommend how I can lighten them up or something so I can threshold them properly on photoshop?
